About The Position

The Senior Tooling Engineer is responsible for leading the design, development, qualification, and continuous improvement of injection molds and related tooling within a high‑volume plastics manufacturing environment. This role ensures that tooling meets performance, quality, and cost targets while supporting efficient, stable, and scalable molding operations. The engineer acts as a technical authority on mold design, materials, processing, and troubleshooting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Plastics Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 7+ years of experience in injection molding tooling engineering.
  • Strong understanding of mold design principles, mold flow analysis, and plastic part design.
  • Hands‑on experience with mold trials, troubleshooting, and optimization.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools (SolidWorks, or similar).
  • Familiarity with hot runner systems, cooling design, and automation interfaces.
  • Strong project management and vendor management skills.
  • Experience in regulated industries (medical, medical device, pharma).

Nice To Haves

  • Background in scientific molding or RJG/Decoupled Molding methodologies.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement tools.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, specification, and procurement of new injection molds, fixtures, and auxiliary tooling.
  • Review and optimize mold designs for manufacturability, cycle time, part quality, and longevity.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external mold builders to ensure tooling meets engineering and production requirements.
  • Oversee tooling from concept through end‑of‑life, including qualification, maintenance, repair, and refurbishment.
  • Develop and maintain tooling standards, documentation, and preventive maintenance plans.
  • Analyze mold wear, failure modes, and performance trends to drive improvements in durability and reliability.
  • Partner with process engineers and technicians to diagnose molding issues such as flash, short shots, warpage, sink, and cosmetic defects.
  • Recommend and implement tooling modifications to improve part quality, reduce scrap, and shorten cycle times.
  • Support DOE activities, mold trials, and validation runs.
  • Work closely with product design, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams to ensure tooling aligns with business and production needs.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to tooling technicians and junior engineers.
