About The Position

As an Sr. Power Systems Engineer you will be involved with leading the next generation of electrical systems in a team environment. You will not only be a thought leader for power systems for aviation, but also adjacent spaces that offer enabling technologies in the domains of space, marine, and land. You will be both contributing and leading the development of advanced generation, distribution, and control of electrical power. As part of a multi-disciplinary team, you will contribute to the vision, architecting, design, and implementation of R&D systems.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Engineering or a related field with at least 7 years of experience focused on controls applied to electric machines, or a Bachelor's degree with at least 10 years of relevant experience.
  • A track record of demonstrated success and execution of systems engineering and a flow down to solutions involving electrical and control systems design.
  • In-depth knowledge of electrical systems including electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical technology aspects.
  • Experience in direct or indirect leadership of a cross-functional team of engineers.
  • US Citizenship is required due to the nature of the duties of this position.
  • Excellent customer engagement skills.
  • Working knowledge of simulation tools including Simulink, AFSIM, and PLECS.
  • Must be willing to work onsite in Niskayuna, NY.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD with 5 years of experience with electric machines.
  • Expertise in dielectric materials for motors, generators, and power cables.
  • Machine design expertise using finite element analysis tools.
  • Excellence in power system unit and supervisory controls including drives, exciters, and energy management controls.
  • Security clearance.
  • MBA.
  • Programming languages including Matlab/Simulink, C/C++, and other languages used for real-time unit and power controllers.
  • Experience in the aerospace industry and proven ability to develop proposals and secure programs in US government DoD programs.

Responsibilities

  • Work with customers, government agencies, universities, and other stakeholders.
  • Lead, shape, develop, and execute a vision towards increased electrification of aero and space vehicles.
  • Understand customers' needs, elicit requirements, develop strategies and a vision, and follow through on R&D execution.
  • Utilize electric power systems for more electric vehicles (typically aircraft) for propulsion augmentation.
  • Research, develop, and design breakthrough technologies including system design, controls, electrical machines, materials, and electronics.
  • Use system simulation tools, such as MATLAB, Simulink, and PLECS, to validate and refine control algorithms for electric machines.
  • Work closely with the electrical machine design team to integrate system and unit controls.
  • Deliver effective presentations, reports, and publications to Global Research, GE Businesses, government agencies, professional societies, and peer-reviewed journals.
