About The Position

Cleveland-Cliffs has an immediate opening for a Senior Employment Attorney to join our Legal Department at either our Headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio or at our Regional Office in West Chester, Ohio. This role will be responsible for providing legal support to the Cleveland-Cliffs Human Resources, Compensation, and Benefits teams. As Senior Employment Attorney, this individual will have a direct professional reporting line to the Group Counsel, Labor and Employment in the Company’s legal department. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with applicable laws and minimizing legal risk across the organization.

Requirements

  • JD from an accredited law school
  • Licensed and in good standing to practice law
  • Minimum of seven years of experience practicing employment law

Nice To Haves

  • Large law firm or corporate legal department experience strongly preferred
  • Significant experience in employment litigation strongly preferred
  • Experience with unionized work environments preferred
  • Experience with employee benefits is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with general direction
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask on time-sensitive projects and manage competing priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise appropriate judgment and discretion in confidential and sensitive matters
  • Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and negotiation skills

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal support for the Company’s human resources team with day-to-day employment issues including recruiting, hiring, absence and disability management, discipline and performance management, termination, and post-employment obligations
  • Stay abreast of the evolving landscape of federal, state, and local laws relevant to labor and employment and employee benefits and update Company leadership as appropriate
  • Draft and negotiate various employment documents including employment agreements, severance agreements, policies, templates, and training materials
  • Manage employment litigation matters, including supervising and collaborating with outside counsel, making strategy decisions/recommendations, administering litigation holds, and coordinating discovery
  • Manage administrative agency claims (e.g., EEOC and FEPA charges), including investigation, response preparation, and agency correspondence, with or without assistance from outside counsel
  • Manage outside counsel in the performance of complex or voluminous employment or benefits-related legal work
  • Other duties as requested, and flexibility to work on special projects and fill specific needs in the labor and employment arena, and possibly other legal subject areas
  • Report to work onsite on a full-time basis, with occasional travel for litigation and other business needs
