About The Position

This position provides senior-level electrical engineering leadership and technical oversight for the development and execution of battery energy storage, turbine, and reciprocating engine generation projects, with a primary focus on substation, medium-voltage (MV), and interconnection system design. The role supports the Vice President of Development and Sr. Director of Engineering by guiding project teams through all phases of development, from early feasibility through construction and commissioning. The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for leading intermediate-to-complex engineering analysis and design activities, establishing technical standards, and providing subject matter expertise for grid-interconnected power generation facilities. This position partners closely with project management, external consultants, EPCs, and internal stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, on schedule, and in compliance with regulatory and company requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
  • Strong ability to read, interpret, and develop electrical drawings, specifications, and schematics.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Proven project management and technical leadership capabilities.
  • Experience with engineering and design software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar platforms.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities with high attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years of experience supporting utility-scale BESS, renewable, and/or thermal power generation projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of substation design, MV/LV distribution, protection and controls, and grid interconnection systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with CAISO, PG&E, and other California PTO interconnection and regulatory processes.
  • Familiarity with NERC, CPUC GO 167, and applicable industry standards.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and engineering oversight for substation, MV, protection, metering, and power system designs associated with BESS, turbine, and reciprocating engine projects.
  • Lead the development and review of electrical system architectures, single-line diagrams, grounding systems, protection and control schemes, relay coordination, and interconnection facilities.
  • Coordinate with internal engineering teams, project managers, and consultants to develop integrated system designs under the direction of the Sr. Director of Engineering.
  • Serve as a primary technical interface with ISOs, PTOs, and AHJs on grid impact studies, interconnection agreements, site inspections, commissioning, and final approvals.
  • Support project budgeting and scheduling by developing technical scopes, cost estimates, and engineering schedules.
  • Develop and review procurement packages, evaluate vendor proposals, review technical submittals, and resolve technical issues during equipment procurement.
  • Lead technical reviews of major electrical equipment including transformers, switchgear, inverters, protection relays, and MV/LV distribution systems.
  • Resolve drawing interpretation issues, design conflicts, constructability concerns, and field interferences.
  • Initiate, review, and resolve RFIs and technical correspondence with third parties and project partners.
  • Review and prepare technical drawings, sketches, and design documentation to support construction, change management, and commissioning activities.
  • Support development activities including environmental review, permitting, licensing, and regulatory compliance as related to electrical systems.
  • Establish and uphold company engineering standards, best practices, and quality control procedures.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while mentoring junior engineers and supporting team development.
  • Travel as required (approximately 20%) to project sites, utility meetings, and field inspections.
