Requirements

  • Attention to Detail: Ability to design and develop intricate electrical power systems, meticulously tracking design elements and technical requirements throughout these processes.
  • Strong Knowledge of Electrical Engineering Principles: proficiency in applying principles of engineering, electrical engineering discipline, and advanced mathematics for analysis, design, and troubleshooting, specifically in power distribution and control equipment
  • Communication Skills: Strong collaboration skills to work closely with other engineers and technicians, clearly explaining designs and reasoning. Ability to relay instructions during product development, production, construction, and to explain complex issues to customers with little technical expertise. Experience in reviewing and participating in contract negotiations is also desirable.
  • Project Management: Competence in managing various aspects of power systems or other projects to ensure tasks are completed on schedule and within budget. Ability to monitor and evaluate work at job sites as projects progress.
  • Writing Skills: Excellent technical writing skills to prepare reports and summaries on interconnection studies, contribute to standards development, draft specifications and requirement documents, and provide status reports on projects. The ability to make findings and specifications easily understood by both technical and non-technical audiences is essential.
  • BSc or BEng in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Must be willing to travel (up to 50%).

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s degree is preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the end-to-end design process for low-voltage (LV) and medium-voltage (MV) equipment.
  • Designing busbar layouts, selecting circuit breakers (ACB/MCCB), and calculating short-circuit withstand ratings.
  • Designing for 5kV to 38kV applications, including vacuum circuit breakers, protective relaying (SEL, Multilin), and instrument transformers (CTs/VTs).
  • Integrating VFDs, soft starters, and thermal overload protection into modular designs.
  • Engineering integrated, prefabricated power solutions including transformers and cooling systems.
  • Utilizing EPLAN Electric P8 or AutoCAD Electrical to generate single-line diagrams (SLD), three-line diagrams, control schematics and wiring schedules and point-to-point interconnection maps.
  • Using SolidWorks or AutoCAD 3D to perform busbar routing, enclosure design and thermal management.
  • Ensuring all designs strictly adhere to NEC (NFPA 70) and NFPA 70E (Arc Flash safety).
  • Guaranteeing equipment meets UL 891, UL 1558, UL 845 (MCCs), and IEEE C37.20.2 (Metal-Clad Switchgear).
  • Calculating Available Fault Current to ensure appropriate AIC ratings.
  • Designing for safety using maintenance switches, light-sensing relays, or remote racking.
  • Ensuring upstream and downstream protective devices trip in the correct sequence.
  • Conducting rigorous "redline" checks on junior engineers' drawings to identify errors in logic, sizing, or bill of materials (BOM).
  • Finalizing accurate bills of materials for procurement, ensuring components are compatible and lead times align with project schedules.
  • Drafting Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) procedures and providing remote or on-site support during primary and secondary injection testing.
  • Maintain a presence at the Switchboard Center of Excellence in Tampa, Florida, for at least 50% of the work week.
  • Travel to various production sites as required, to oversee operations (fabrication, refurbishing, remanufacturing, repair, testing, …) and provide technical support.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement by adhering to CIPS principles and identifying best practices within the team and across locations.
  • Provide training and mentorship to younger engineers and technicians.
  • Actively participate in the IPS UCE tier meeting process.
  • Utilize Continuous Improvement Process Solution (CIPS) tools and Processes.
