About The Position

Disney Hyperion is looking for a creative Senior Editor who will both acquire and create children's book fiction for the list, with a focus on commercial, character-driven picture book franchises. Reporting to the Editorial Director, the Senior Editor will manage their own list of titles, oversee junior staff, and help drive picture book strategy for the imprint. You will report to the Editorial Director. This is a full-time, onsite position based out of our New York office.

Requirements

  • 6+ years experience in acquiring children's fiction properties, including structural and line editing expertise, and managing books through the production process
  • Proven track record in developing and publishing commercial children's book intellectual property
  • Extensive editorial experience in picture books and illustrated children's book formats
  • Excellent skills in author, agent, and illustrator relations
  • Established relationships with literary agents, strong negotiation skills, and experience in redlining contracts
  • Exceptional written, verbal and presentation skills
  • Strong understanding of profit and loss statements
  • In-depth knowledge of the children's book marketplace and youth media landscape
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Proficient in Word and Excel
  • Capable of working both independently and as part of a team

Nice To Haves

  • Strong understanding of current pop culture trends and youth media
  • Proficiency in creating presentations using Keynote or PowerPoint

Responsibilities

  • Manage key Disney Hyperion authors and a select list of inherited titles
  • Strategically evaluate and acquire submissions for the Disney Hyperion imprint; work closely with Editorial Director to shape and drive picture book strategy
  • Participate in team intellectual property brainstorm meetings and editorial meetings
  • Write and revise proposals for new picture book programs, select middle grade and young adult fiction
  • Prepare acquisitions paperwork, including memos and profit and loss statements; track paperwork for approved projects through the acquisitions process; negotiate book deals, review contracts
  • Draft fact sheets, catalog copy, bound galley copy, and jacket/cover copy
  • Present titles at meetings including acquisitions, launch, and sales conference
  • Develop and maintain a strong list of agent, author, and illustrator contacts
  • Partner closely with Content Packaging and Disney Entertainment teams on beyond the page opportunities
  • Provide guidance and support to junior staff members.
