The Prosperity Vice Presidency is one of the World Bank Group's five verticals, with a mandate that emphasizes “Growth, Finance, and Institutions for all.” Our approach leverages data-driven analysis and combines expertise from both the public and private sectors, together with International Finance Corporation (IFC). The Prosperity Vice Presidency supports clients in advancing evidence-based structural reforms to establish the foundations for inclusive and sustainable growth in the thematic areas of macro-fiscal policy; financial sector resilience, access, and deepening; private sector development, trade, and competitiveness; and governance and public sector reform, including statistical capacity. Prosperity is comprised of five Global Departments. The Economic Policy (EP) department comprises over 400 staff in regional and global units. The global department for this unit focuses on economic growth, jobs, macroeconomic and debt, and fiscal policies. Global departments play a key role in supporting the regional departments deliver best global knowledge and practices. More than half of the EP's regional staff is decentralized to the field working very closely with the country management units (CMUs) and in proximity to the clients. EP leads or participate in a wide variety of AAA and client advisory work requiring an integrative function that add to their core expertise. EP's professionals are responsible for the preparation and delivery of the majority of the Bank's Development Policy Operations using both IDA and IBRD. The Jobs and Growth Unit in the Economic Policy Global Department is dedicated to promoting sustainable economic development and job creation in developing countries. The unit focuses on analyzing labor markets, economic growth patterns, and the impact of various policies on employment and economic performance. The unit collaborates with governments, international organizations, and other stakeholders to design and implement effective strategies for economic development.

Requirements

  • A master's degree in economics or related field with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • PhD in economics or related field is preferred.
  • Experience analyzing and modelling labor markets and the interactions of their dynamics with the macroeconomy.
  • A strong understanding of macroeconomics, and the functioning of labor markets in a developing country context.
  • An excellent track record of being responsive and innovative.
  • Strong communications skills and experience teaching complex economic concepts to non-technical economists.
  • A solid track record mentoring junior staff.
  • A demonstrated track record of work flexibly, creatively and to multitasking as the need arises.
  • A high degree of self-motivation, coupled with a commitment towards teamwork and knowledge sharing.

Responsibilities

  • Develop customized versions of the World Bank's core macroeconomic modeling systems (MFMod and MANAGE) to quantify the impacts of policy and institutional reforms on labor market outcomes in developing economies.
  • Contribute to the core Country diagnostic, the Country Growth and Jobs Report.
  • Provide support and guidance to the operational country teams and country economists in developing economic models for specific Growth and Jobs Reports.
  • Liaise with other parts of the Bank, especially the global teams in EP and other Departments within and outside of Prosperity.
  • Lead, participate in, and contribute to policy research on jobs and growth, especially on estimation of the policy impact.
  • Contribute to global analytical works and flagship reports.
  • Build and support relationships with GPs and Regions to ensure a strategic and coordinated approach.
  • Support the crafting of key positioning speeches or presentations for senior leadership.
  • Support preparations for high-level meetings, events, and trips.
