About The Position

This role will serve as an Arizona senior technical expert and thought leader for the AZ Drainage Group within the company’s Transportation Practice. Responsible for advancing technical excellence in hydrology and hydraulics, leading complex flood mitigation and drainage infrastructure design for freeway, highway, and municipal roadway projects. This position provides high-level oversight of hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, stormwater management systems, bridge and culvert hydraulics, and drainage infrastructure design while ensuring technical rigor, regulatory compliance, and alignment with state and local agency standards. This role balances technical delivery, business development, and staff mentorship.

Requirements

  • Minimum Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering (BSCE) or a related field
  • Must have a minimum of ten (10) years of transportation engineering experience
  • Must be a registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Arizona.
  • Good analytical, problem solving, and data management skills are essential
  • Must be a good communicator with experience in technical writing and oral presentation
  • Must demonstrate ability to manage projects, develop work, and provide excellent client service
  • Travel required when necessary
  • Proven knowledge and skills in Microsoft Office, MicroStation, OpenRoads, and AutoCAD
  • Must have integrity and be highly motivated
  • Expert level proficiency is required in industry standard hydrology and hydraulics software (i.e. HEC-RAS (1D/2D), HEC-HMS, HY-8)
  • Valid Driver's License, with the ability to maintain insurability under the company's insurance carrier

Nice To Haves

  • Certification and eligibility for registration in other states where the company has offices is a plus
  • Other certifications are a plus but not required, including CFM certification
  • DOT and municipality experience in all facets of engineering for multiple states
  • River mechanics, erosion and scour calculations, and sediment transport training/experience is a plus
  • Experience using Project Wise or other file management/file-sharing software is a plus
  • Knowledge of standard hydrology and hydraulics software is a plus (i.e. CivilStorm, InRoads Storm and Sanitary, FLO-2D, QGIS, SWMM)
  • Marketing experience is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Hydrology & Hydraulic Modeling: Lead the technical deployment and application of hydrologic and hydraulic modeling tools across all project phases, including watershed analysis, corridor drainage studies, and final design. Utilize and oversee modeling platforms such as HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS (1D/2D), EPA SWMM, and related stormwater modeling software.
  • Stormwater & Drainage Design: Provide expertise in the design of storm drain systems, culverts, bridges (hydraulic coordination), detention/retention basins, open channels, energy dissipation structures, and floodplain mitigation improvements.
  • Floodplain & Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with FEMA floodplain requirements, state and local drainage criteria manuals, and applicable federal, state, and municipal regulations. Coordinate CLOMR/LOMR processes when required.
  • Innovation & Resiliency: Drive innovation in sustainable stormwater management practices, green infrastructure, low-impact development (LID), and climate resiliency strategies to enhance project delivery and client outcomes.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Serve as the technical lead and Subject Matter Expert (SME) on complex, high-impact projects requiring advanced hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, floodplain evaluation, and stormwater system design, ensuring technically sound and cost-effective solutions.
  • Develop project scopes and budgets, interface with and maintain clients, mentor and development of junior staff, and development of project plans and schedules.
  • Meet with clients to prepare and or validate proposed scopes of work.
  • Lead drainage technical strategy and content for proposals, serving as a key Seller/Doer in pursuit efforts.
  • Experience speaking to the public and interacting with local and state agencies is preferred.
  • Must be able to demonstrate successful records of Business Development, program/project management for established AEC firms, managing budgeted design efforts, and demonstrated skills working in multi-discipline teams.
  • Mentor and train mid- and junior-level engineers in hydrologic analysis, hydraulic modeling, storm drain design, and drainage report preparation.
  • Demonstrate clear and concise, oral and written communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to coordinate meetings, resources, and presentations
