About The Position

As the Senior Director, Tax Controversy, you will lead Walmart’s U.S. Federal income tax & International audit practice and drive the company’s global tax controversy strategy. You’ll serve as a key advisor to senior leadership, ensuring that Walmart’s tax positions are defended effectively while identifying and reducing risk across our global footprint. This highly visible role oversees both Federal and International tax controversy matters, including audits, appeals, and litigation, and plays a critical part in shaping Walmart’s global tax governance framework. You’ll lead a team of professionals responsible for executing audit strategy, supporting Global Tax Centers of Excellence (COEs), and standardizing controversy governance and controls worldwide. This is an opportunity to join a growing Global Controversy tax team, at the scale of Fortune #1. You will serve as a HQ partner and key resource for Tax Controversy for non-U.S. matters and drive value through the identification and resolution of issues and opportunities. In your partnership with local Tax Leadership, local markets, and global Tax SMEs you’ll offer technical support, assistance with identifying relevant alternative dispute strategies, and driving best practices across the markets. Global collaboration will be key for this role, both outside the U.S. and within. In addition to market leadership, you’ll also partner with Walmart’s International Counsels, external advisors, and serve as a key tax liaison with many different departments. Your enthusiasm to understand and learn our business operations and strategies, along with your zeal to collaborate will aid and support the development of local strategies & execution plans, and then aid in the execution & delivery of results.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience managing complex federal and international tax audits, appeals, and litigation.
  • Demonstrated success negotiating with the IRS and global tax authorities.
  • Expertise in federal income taxation, audit risk management, and controversy resolution.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to influence across functions and work effectively with senior executives and external advisors.
  • Advanced degree in Accounting, Law, or Taxation (CPA or JD/LL.M. in Taxation preferred).
  • Prior experience with a large multinational company or Big Four accounting firm strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, or related field and 6 years’ experience in accounting, tax audits, tax planning, or related area OR 8 years’ experience in accounting, tax audits, tax planning, or related area.
  • 4 years’ supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Walmart’s federal and international audit strategy – oversee the formation, alignment, and execution of all major income tax audit initiatives across jurisdictions.
  • Manage and develop a high-performing team – lead four direct reports to execute strategy and enhance Walmart’s ability to identify and resolve complex tax risks.
  • Serve as controversy lead for global COEs – partner across regions to de-risk Walmart’s global structure by identifying, evaluating, recording, and reducing exposure to tax matters.
  • Oversee all aspects of U.S. federal income tax controversy – manage IRS relationships, develop and execute audit plans, negotiate audit settlements, and resolve proposed adjustments.
  • Direct tax litigation and appeals – lead tax positions in domestic and international disputes, coordinate with our Tax Counsel group, outside counsel, and support litigation strategy across federal, state, and global jurisdictions.
  • Guide development of tax opinions and memos – ensure defensibility of uncertain tax positions and alignment with audit strategy.
  • Drive innovation in tax governance and reporting – lead global controversy forecasting and develop enhanced reporting on audit strategies, risk/reward outcomes, and resolution timelines.
