About The Position

The LA Y is the Center for Community Well-Being in Los Angeles, committed to building stronger communities by providing equitable programs and services to empower all. We are focused on fighting food insecurity, providing equity in education, making sure every child has the opportunity to experience the joy of sports, ensuring kids and teens have a safe place to grow, learn and live a healthy lifestyle. The LA Y’s health and wellness initiatives offer medical and mental health resources to ensure everyone has access to basic health needs. Our mission is to provide services and resources that contribute to the well-being of our community. The LA Y operates 29 Centers and over 200 program sites across LA County. The Senior Program Director serves as a key operational leader at the Crenshaw Family YMCA, responsible for overseeing all programmatic and membership functions within the center and across the surrounding community. Reporting to the Executive Director, this role provides leadership across a broad portfolio including membership and healthy living, youth sports, teen programming, senior programs, community-based programs, and signature events. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that the YMCA is a welcoming, high-quality, and impactful center for all members and participants. The Senior Program Director functions as a utility leader, ensuring strong day-to-day operations of the facility, high-quality program delivery, and meaningful community engagement. This role oversees staff, supports program growth and retention, manages budgets, and drives enrollment and participation across all program areas. The position works closely with center leadership and community partners to align programs with local needs and YMCA priorities, while fostering a culture of belonging, safety, and excellence.

Requirements

  • AGE: 21 years-old or older
  • EDUCATION: High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • RELATED EXPERIENCE: 3–5 years of progressive experience in program management, membership, or youth development.
  • Experience supervising staff and managing multiple program areas.
  • Experience in community-based programming, youth sports, wellness, or related areas.
  • SPECIALIZED SKILLS: Strong organizational and operational management skills with the ability to oversee multiple priorities.
  • Ability to build relationships and engage members, staff, and community partners.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • CERTIFICATIONS: Must hold or be willing to obtain within 60 days: Infant-Child-Adult CPR, First Aid, and AED certification.
  • WORK ENVIRONMENT/MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to plan, lead, and participate in activities.
  • Job is performed in indoor and outdoor environments throughout the year.
  • Ability to lift 30–35 lbs.
  • This is not a remote position and requires presence at the Crenshaw Family YMCA and community program locations.

Responsibilities

  • PROGRAM OPERATIONS & MEMBER EXPERIENCE Oversee all program areas including membership and healthy living, youth sports, teen programs, senior programs, and community-based programming.
  • Ensure a welcoming, inclusive, and high-quality experience for all members, participants, and guests.
  • Oversee daily operations of programs and facility spaces, ensuring programs are fully staffed, scheduled, and operating effectively.
  • Monitor program quality through evaluations, member feedback, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Ensure all facilities, program areas, and equipment are clean, safe, and in proper working order.
  • Support and participate in program delivery and member engagement as needed to ensure strong experiences.
  • Drive program enrollment, retention, and participation to meet or exceed established goals.
  • STAFF ENGAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate program and membership staff.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, support, and professional development to ensure high performance and program quality.
  • Schedule and deploy staff effectively to meet program and operational needs.
  • Foster a positive team culture aligned with YMCA values, promoting staff engagement and retention.
  • Lead regular staff meetings and ensure clear communication of expectations, priorities, and updates.
  • BUDGET & FISCAL MANAGEMENT Support Executive Director with the creation and management of program and membership budgets, ensuring alignment with monthly, quarterly, and annual goals.
  • Support Executive Director with financial performance including revenue, expenses, and forecasting.
  • Support and lead efforts related to the Annual Support Campaign, including staff and volunteer engagement and donor support.
  • Identify opportunities for program growth, revenue generation, and operational efficiency.
  • COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, VOLUNTEERS & PARTNERSHIPS Build and maintain strong relationships with community partners, schools, local organizations, and stakeholders.
  • Represent the YMCA in the community and support outreach efforts to expand program visibility and participation.
  • Plan and support community events, initiatives, and partnerships that strengthen the YMCA’s presence and impact.
  • Identify, support and lead volunteer engagement opportunities across programs and events.
  • Ensure effective communication of program offerings, schedules, and events to members and the community.
  • PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT & MARKETING Develop and implement program strategies that respond to community needs and align with YMCA priorities.
  • Support marketing and promotional efforts using tools such as Canva and other communication platforms.
  • Ensure program information, schedules, and materials are accurate and up to date.
  • Collaborate with center leadership to grow and diversify program offerings.
  • SAFETY & COMPLIANCE Ensure all programs and operations meet YMCA safety standards, including supervision, risk management, and incident reporting.
  • Conduct regular safety checks and ensure compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Ensure staff are trained in mandated reporting and report suspected child abuse or neglect in accordance with laws and YMCA policies.
  • GENERAL ADMINISTRATION Attend staff meetings and training as required.
  • Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management.
