About The Position

SUNY Cortland is looking for a dynamic, inclusive, and collaborative leader to reignite the university's Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). The CTL is a campus resource for the creation and sharing of knowledge around college teaching and learning. The CTL supports faculty and staff working directly with students by providing professional development on student development, teaching methods, assessment, and inclusive practices within and beyond the classroom. Given the broad depth of knowledge on the campus, particularly within education disciplines, the CTL will create venues for collaboration and dissemination of colleagues' expertise. The Senior Director is charged with understanding the needs of SUNY Cortland learners and supporting the faculty in all aspects of teaching including, but not limited to: pedagogy, course design, assessment, facilitation, methods, and inclusion. They will ensure that the campus is aware of local needs and resources as well as available support from SUNY and professional organizations. The Senior Director will administer the personnel, budgeting, and planning/assessment for the office. The Senior Director will hold a full-time twelve-month administrative appointment, with the possibility of a zero percent time faculty appointment in an academic unit, at a rank dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Requirements

  • Master's degree
  • 5+ years progressively responsible experience in an educational environment which includes leadership responsibilities
  • Experience delivering professional development/training and/or teaching in higher education.
  • Demonstrated technology skills and ability, including the use of a LMS and other educational technology
  • Experience teaching at the college level
  • Demonstrated effective supervisory experience
  • Experience managing a budget

Nice To Haves

  • A terminal degree or master's degree with significant progress toward doctorate, especially if in education
  • Experience working with teaching and learning center programs
  • Demonstrated application of course design principles and practices in a postsecondary environment
  • Record of such as professional presentations, grants, or publications in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) or Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER)
  • Experience teaching in the Brightspace LMS and/or training and otherwise supporting others in using Brightspace
  • Experience and demonstrated success in obtaining grant funding.

Responsibilities

  • Connect faculty with traditional and emergent scholarships on college teaching by sharing best practice information, organizing workshops and panels, inviting keynote speakers, etc.
  • Support faculty scholarship and grant development on college teaching by researching and sharing relevant grant opportunities, collaborating with faculty on teaching grants, and collaborating with the Research and Sponsored Programs Office on grant development related to college teaching and learning.
  • Support curricular design including developing student learning outcomes, assessment, leading the annual teaching and learning conference.
  • Facilitate a campus consortium on teaching and learning to increase dialogue and integrated planning.
  • Support innovation in design, pedagogy, and delivery including a focus on online teaching.
  • Coordinate work of faculty teaching fellows earning extra service for their contributions.
  • Manage the center budget.
  • Supervise and mentor the Associate Director, instructional designers, and a shared part-time Administrative Assistant 1.
