SUMMARY: The Senior Director of Safety Operations is responsible for the safety framework on the At-Risk side of the business, as well as safety focused training and development, transformation, contractor/pre-qualification enhancement and working with execution and project teams to ensure all CSM employees are familiar with and accountable to best safety practices. You will work closely with the At-Risk Safety team, Pre-Construction and support Execution Teams to ensure safety is lived as a core value across the organization and support the company’s overall business strategies and risk mitigation. You are responsible for the overall creation, development and maintenance of an effective Environment Health Safety and Sustainability program for the At-Risk side of the business. You work closely with the safety team providing support and guidance on safety execution for projects across the organization. The Senior Director of Safety Operations reports directly to the SVP of Divisional Operations, At-Risk. This is a full-time FLSA-exempt position. It requires 40 hours per week and the ability to work more if required. Industry: EHS

Requirements

  • 4 Year College Degree in Safety, EHS, Construction Management, Project Management or Engineering (or equivalent field experience).
  • 10+ years field experience.
  • Knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite of products: Outlook, word, excel, project, power point (Desired knowledge includes: Timberscan, Procore).

  • Desired Certified Safety Professional (CSP) [via Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP)], minimum ASP Associate Safety Professional with intent to achieve CSP Certified Safety Professional within 90 days.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and lead a Safety Governance Council with monthly cadence to drive decisions, remove barriers, and enforce accountability; define and cascade decision rights for deviations and stop-work authority.
  • Proactively create short- and long-term EHS roadmap aligned with company BHAG: Safest Company on the Planet, and core value Lead with Safety.
  • In collaboration with the executive team, create annual key performance indicators (KPIs) for at-risk projects, and work with safety team towards meeting these goals with excellence.
  • Maintain presence on at-risk projects to reinforce safety standards and coach leaders on critical safety behaviors.
  • Tie safety behaviors to performance management in partnership with People Operations and Safety Director; hold execution teams accountable to KPIs and deliverables.
  • Develop an environment of psychological safety across all departments.
  • Create, maintain and administer safety department policies and programs; challenge and drive best practices in At-Risk project planning and execution.
  • Research new safety methods, technology, procedures, and legislative codes to maintain an industry-leading program.
  • Ensures compliance with OSHA regulations on project sites regionally and nationally.
  • Interface with regulatory agencies and insurance carriers to manage risk.
  • Initiate safety communications, training programs and expectations and drive accountability to directives on project sites and among safety team.
  • Mentoring at-risk weekly inspection process, driving 100% completion and qualitative compliance.
  • Mentoring at-risk PTP completion and qualitative compliance.
  • Mentoring at-risk Good Catch Program.
  • Assuring at-risk adoption of our behavioral based safety approach.
  • Support Business Development in RFP reviews focusing on owner’s safety expectations.
  • Attend pre-bid walkthroughs and post-bid interviews; ensure safety staffing and requirements are priced and planned early.
  • Coach trade contractors to improve their safety programs and outcomes; enforce contractual safety clauses with remedies.
  • In partnership with People Operations, build and maintain a role-based training matrix & syllabus for every execution level/position within At-Risk with renewal cadence and hold teams accountable for training completion and delivery.
  • Launch and sustain safety training program and expectations for At-Risk subcontractors.
  • Oversee compliance dashboards for OSHA 10/30, competent-person status, and permit training.
  • Support regular cadence of safety training and ensure certification renewals are current.
  • Conduct SWOT analysis and lessons learned reviews post-project; integrate findings into future preconstruction planning and project execution.
  • Attend recertification and training to stay current on OSHA standards and emerging safety technologies.
  • Review site safety inspections and data analysis to identify trends and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure closed-loop learning for incidents and near misses (owner, due date, verification).
  • Review and analyze injury and incident trends; forecast and strategize corrective actions for future projects.
  • Collaborate with estimating and trade partners to integrate safety measures early in planning.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
