About The Position

Alnylam is pioneering RNA interference (RNAi) therapeutics and scaling for global impact across research, clinical development, manufacturing, and commercialization. Our Cybersecurity organization is evolving to match that ambition, and we’re seeking a Senior Director of Identity & Access Management to define and drive our approach to a global digital identity strategy and implementation. The Senior Director, Identity & Access Management (IAM) is responsible for defining, delivering, and operating a comprehensive program that protects the organization, enables the business, and supports regulatory compliance. This role owns the IAM strategy and roadmap across workforce, non-employee, as well as application identities. This role reports to the VP/CISO and is accountable for defining a cross‑functional, technology‑forward approach that enables innovation while managing complexity at scale. This is a hybrid role primarily based in our Cambridge, MA office with 3 days/week onsite.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information security, engineering, or related field. Master’s degree or MBA preferred.
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in identity and access management, with 10+ years in a leadership role.
  • Deep knowledge of IAM concepts including IGA, PAM, MFA, CIAM, and directory services.
  • Experience operating IAM programs in regulated environments (pharma, biotech, healthcare, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of frameworks such as NIST CSF, Zero Trust, SOX, HIPAA, and privacy regulations.
  • Proven ability to translate technical risk into business-relevant terms for executives.

Nice To Haves

  • Industry-recognized certifications strongly preferred (e.g., CISSP, CCSP, SABSA, TOGAF, or equivalent).

Responsibilities

  • Define and execute the enterprise IAM strategy and multi-year roadmap aligned to Zero Trust principles and business risk priorities.
  • Own identity lifecycle management for employees, contractors, and partners, including joiner/mover/leaver processes.
  • Lead identity governance, access certifications, segregation of duties, and policy enforcement across critical systems.
  • Oversee privileged access management (PAM) and service account governance to reduce systemic and insider risk.
  • Partner with HR, IT, Digital, Compliance, and Legal to ensure IAM controls support business operations and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure IAM platforms are resilient, well-architected, and operationally mature, with clear SLAs and metrics.
  • Drive adoption of modern authentication, MFA, conditional access, and identity threat detection capabilities.
  • Support audits, inspections, and regulatory inquiries related to identity and access controls.
  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing IAM team with strong technical and program management skills.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the CISO and leadership on identity-related risk and investment decisions.
  • Establish clear accountability, operating rhythms, and reporting for IAM initiatives and outcomes.
  • Influence without authority and effectively manage cross-functional dependencies.
