About The Position

The Head of Risk Management is a high-impact leadership role responsible for protecting the capital, assets, and reputation of The RMR Group and its clients. Managing a national portfolio with $40B in assets under management, including 18,000 residential and 2,000 commercial units, the incumbent will evolve the risk function from a defensive compliance unit into a strategic value-driver. This role reports directly to the COO and serves as the primary risk advisor. The ideal candidate combines strategic vision with operational execution, leveraging technology and predictive planning to proactively identify, mitigate, and manage financial, operational, and insurable risks for multi-family, industrial, retail, office and other commercial properties.

Requirements

  • Experience: A minimum of 10+ years of risk leadership within institutional real estate or industry with comparable risk exposure.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Finance, Insurance, Business Administration, or related field
  • Competencies: Exceptional executive presence, deep regulatory knowledge, crisis leadership and a track record of managing large-scale insurance renewals.

Nice To Haves

  • MBA or Master’s in Finance/Risk Management, FRM, PRM, or CRM designations highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Insurance Strategy & Risk Placement:
  • Own the enterprise-wide insurance strategy across all RMR asset classes.
  • Design, place, and optimize Property, Liability, and Specialty programs.
  • Align coverage structures, deductibles/SIRs, and retentions with risk appetite and ownership models.
  • Ensure lender and equity partner insurance requirements are met (with Compliance).
  • Lead process improvements and technology upgrades (e.g., Origami Risk).
  • Guide Operators in preparing for and responding to major events.
  • Claims Governance & Oversight:
  • Provide centralized oversight of all claims, including Bonds.
  • Set and monitor settlement authority limits and escalation thresholds.
  • Ensure consistency in claims handling, reserving, and outcomes across asset classes.
  • Stakeholder & Partner Management:
  • Serve as the primary contact for brokers, carriers, TPAs, and advisors.
  • Lead negotiations on pricing, terms, and claim resolutions.
  • Act as the main insurance interface for Asset Management and senior leadership.
  • Financial Transparency & Forecasting:
  • Improve visibility into projected insurance costs and market trends.
  • Provide timely, reliable cost projections to Asset Managers.
  • Enhance confidence in communications with equity partners and investors.
  • Governance, Reporting & Board Support:
  • Deliver portfolio-level reporting on losses, renewals, and emerging risks.
  • Support leadership and Board/Audit Committee discussions on risk financing strategy.
  • Recommend adjustments to coverage, retention levels, and funding approaches.
  • Organizational Capability Building
  • Define clear ownership, standards, and processes within Risk Management.
  • Build internal insurance and claims expertise.
  • Reduce reliance on ad‑hoc or operator‑driven decisions.
