As a Senior Compliance Director, you will collaborate with our business partners to ensure business operations are conducted in compliance with regulatory, legal and organizational requirements. You’ll direct a team of hard-working associates who are responsible for supporting business operations through the creation and maintenance of policies and procedures, training and communications, and coordination of the legislative and regulatory review and implementation program.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate studies in business administration, insurance, business ethics, criminal justice, computer science, finance, or pre-law preferred.
  • Typically, 10 or more years of proven experience in developing and maintaining a compliance program, with relevant background knowledge of compliance training, and development of policies and procedures.
  • In-depth working knowledge of insurance and financial services products and as well as knowledge of state and federal regulations, policy provisions; state insurance department rules and regulations; SEC, NASD, MSRB, state securities regulations and the Internal Revenue Code.
  • Ability to effectively assess risk and develop and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Ability to set work and project priorities, and to evaluate and recommend solutions to compliance and internal process issues.
  • Strong communicator and presenter, able to use a variety of techniques and platforms.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of the organization and with regulatory agencies.
  • Project management, leadership, and data analytic skills preferred.
  • Proven ability to influence and work effectively within a highly-matrixed organization with associates at all levels.
  • Ability to meet/exceed timelines, prioritize, multi-task and maintain flexibility in a fast-paced, changing environment.

  • MBA, Juris Doctorate or graduate studies a plus.
  • Depending on the specific Compliance team, you may be required to obtain professional licenses/registrations within a specific timeframe.

Responsibilities

  • Leads, engages and inspires a team of compliance associates who perform the activities of a corporate compliance program to support and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Partners with business to ensure objectives and strategies are aligned with regulatory requirements, maintaining in-depth business knowledge to ensure appropriate compliance oversight.
  • Counsels business on compliance standards and emerging compliance issues.
  • Collaborates with business unit leaders on the most complex compliance matters.
  • Maintains a strong leadership presence in the business to cultivate an environment where our business partners comfortably seek guidance on compliance matters.
  • Develops, documents and maintains a program that includes risk assessments, development and maintenance of applicable policies, procedures and guidelines and monitoring, testing and reporting protocols that are appropriately tailored to prevent and detect compliance risks.
  • Assesses the design and adequacy of functional compliance policies, procedures, training and objectives to ensure effectiveness of compliance program.
  • Monitors compliance and regulatory industry trends.
  • Accountable for proactively communicating regulatory changes and their impacts, and proposing solutions to ensure compliance.
  • Responsible for leading major projects associated with compliance objectives. May also lead compliance aspect of large projects taking place within business, including regulatory exams.
  • Hires, trains and leads a team of compliance associates with responsibilities that include hiring, training and developing associates and managing individual and team performance.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with business partners, insurance/regulatory agency authorities, trade associations, and other insurance/financial companies.
  • Oversees the development and use of data analytics to enhance the compliance program.
  • Raises compliance issues and potential violations of compliance policies and procedures, laws, regulations and standards of good business to Compliance leadership, Chief Compliance Officer and Nationwide's Chief Compliance Officer, as appropriate.
  • Periodically reports/presents to senior management, boards of directors and others.
  • May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
