About The Position

Solar Landscape is hiring a Battery Energy Storage (BESS) Lead to build on and scale our BESS business focused on distributed, front-of-meter (FTM) storage deployments. This is a senior, execution-oriented leadership role responsible for advancing identified storage opportunities through deployment while establishing the capabilities to scale, with first pipeline of projects expected to reach construction readiness within a year. This role requires a leader with hands-on BESS expertise who has led battery storage projects from concept through permitting, contracting, and construction readiness, effectively coordinating cross-functional teams as storage scales across the platform. The BESS Lead will serve as the primary point of contact for executive leadership on all storage-related matters, advance existing market opportunities while identifying additional opportunities as the business scales, set technical and commercial guardrails, and drive cross-functional execution across Development, Engineering, Interconnection, Finance, Procurement, Construction, and Policy teams. This role will be based in the NY/NJ metro area and is expected to be in-office 3–4 days per week.

Requirements

  • Experience developing and scaling FTM BESS projects across a portfolio of sites; candidates with utility-scale experience can be a strong fit when paired with the ability to operate in a portfolio-based environment.
  • 8+ years of experience developing, procuring, financing, or building BESS projects.
  • Deep understanding of the storage policy and market landscape across U.S., and how regulatory frameworks influence deployment and economics.
  • Proven experience leading storage procurement and commercial negotiations.
  • Solid understanding of BESS economics, project cost drivers, and development-stage risk management.
  • Strong technical fluency in BESS, with the ability to evaluate spec sheets, warranties, and integration requirements.
  • Experience with BESS siting, sizing, permitting, zoning, and AHJ engagement across multiple U.S. jurisdictions.
  • Ability to operate in ambiguity, build new capabilities, and drive execution across cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to synthesize complexity into clear direction and decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Advance existing storage opportunities to commercial close while refining target markets, use cases, and scalable commercial models.
  • Establish clear decision frameworks and go / no-go criteria for markets and projects.
  • Act as the internal owner and subject-matter lead for BESS strategy, tradeoffs, and outcomes.
  • Evaluate state-level BESS opportunities through a practical lens, including policy, incentives, market rules, interconnection, and permitting feasibility.
  • Partner with Business Development to inform BESS site selection strategy, ensuring storage considerations are incorporated early in the pipeline.
  • Translate regulatory, technical, and economic complexity into clear, actionable market entry and investment decisions, including overseeing analytical and economic studies as needed.
  • Maintain a working understanding of BESS permitting, zoning, AHJ, and fire code requirements to inform early siting, sizing, and configuration decisions across distributed deployments.
  • Surface fatal flaws early and drive informed decisions before significant capital or time is committed.
  • Lead early-stage BESS project definition, including siting strategy, system sizing, duration, and high-level design assumptions.
  • Evaluate battery system specifications, performance characteristics, warranties, degradation, and augmentation strategies at a decision-making level.
  • Set preliminary technical guardrails and assumptions to ensure projects are execution-ready.
  • Lead storage vendor and procurement strategy in partnership with Procurement, including OEMs, integrators, EMS providers, and key subcontractors.
  • Evaluate and negotiate commercial terms related to pricing, warranties, performance guarantees, availability, and delivery risk.
  • Define and own BESS cost inputs, assumptions, and risk drivers used in financial models.
  • Partner with Finance, Policy, and Legal to ensure bankability, ITC eligibility, and develop, maintain, and execute Solar Landscape’s FEOC compliance strategy for BESS, including vendor diligence and documentation strategies.
  • Assess Solar Landscape’s BESS capabilities and develop a hiring and resourcing plan to fill identified gaps as the business scales.
  • Resolve open questions and unblock teams by making clear, timely decisions with incomplete information.
  • Hand off projects to Development and Operations with clear scope, assumptions, and risk alignment.
  • Coordinate with Operations on delivery approach, subcontractor strategy, and execution readiness to ensure projects are positioned for successful construction and handoff.
  • Build repeatable processes and internal capabilities that allow BESS to scale beyond the first wave of projects.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for executive leadership on all matters related to BESS.
  • Prepare and deliver executive-level materials on strategy, pipeline status, key risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations.
  • Represent storage internally with credibility, decisiveness, and accountability.
