Senior Direct Support Professional Residential Services for developmentally disabled adults - Amityville, NY Catholic Charities of Long Island models the love of Jesus by offering dignified and compassionate care to poor and vulnerable neighbors of every faith and background. By joining our team, you will share in the joy of providing “care with dignity and life with hope.” The Senior Direct Support Professional supports the mission of Catholic Charities of Long Island by assisting the Residence Manager in ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents and implementation of their Individual Service Plans (ISP).

Requirements

  • High School diploma/GED
  • Previous experience working with developmentally disabled adults is strongly preferred.
  • Clean, valid NYS Driver’s License
  • Ability to transfer and assist in 2-person lift of persons weighing as much as 250 lbs.
  • Ability to transfer persons weighing as much as 250 pounds in and out of bd to a wheelchair, from a wheelchair to toilet or mat, or from a mat to a wheelchair.
  • Ability to propel consumer in wheelchair safely.
  • Capable of stooping and crouching to lift.
  • Ability to protect self, in a non-aggressive manner, during physical or emotional outburst of a resident.
  • Ability to maintain current certifications, up-to-date knowledge of regulatory compliance, agency policies, protocols & evolving operational practices, and attendance at all required in-service trainings
  • A desire to provide/facilitate “person-centered” care to all residents
  • Strong interpersonal skills that demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively & effectively with individuals, Residential Managers, fellow team members, families and community members.

Responsibilities

  • Serving as staff mentor for aspects of new staff orientation
  • Monitoring safety & well-being of residents, ensuring residents are always treated with dignity.
  • Complying with OSHA regulations and universal precautions.
  • Planning and providing social & recreational activities for residents
  • Maintaining and applying current & complete knowledge of emergency procedures in event of a crisis, e.g., fire safety
  • Preparing all required documentation prior to end of shift, reporting all issues/concerns to Residence Manager
  • Administering and/or supervising residents' intake of medication as prescribed in accordance with OPWDD-approved Medications Administration Procedure (AMAP)
  • Providing individual resident instruction and/or assistance with daily living skills and rehabilitation or social skills in accordance with ISP.
  • Encourages and rewards achievement of residents' goals.
  • Transporting and/or accompanying residents to various activities, appointments, events, or other destinations as needed in the house van.
  • Handling telephone calls and inquiries and providing necessary follow-up as directed by Residence Manager.
  • Performing all essential functions of the Direct Support Professional role, as directed or needed
