At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on addressing two of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space infrastructure and increasing mobility on-orbit. We are seeking a Senior Digital Modem Architect. This role encompasses the comprehensive development of digital modems used in RF or optical communication (lasercom) systems from initial prototyping to production. Your desire to innovate will set the standard for new capabilities and a growing range of customer missions.

  • Digital Design & Architecture Design and implement high speed digital designs for new communication systems
  • Apply research and development skills to architect real-world products and capabilities from ideas and/or early prototypes
  • Conduct trade studies on current and future release modem related hardware components including but not limited to mixed signal products, SoCs, FPGAs, ADCs, DACs, and high speed electrical and electro-optical transceivers and PHY s
  • Recommend digital architectures that optimize designs for performance and cost while balancing design for test and manufacturing
  • Development & Testing Support prototype unit build and test phases
  • Maintain detailed documentation of designs, test procedures, and results
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve project objectives and address technical challenges
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in engineering roles involving complex electronic systems
  • Able to work with minimal direction as well collaboratively with cross functional team members
  • Must be proficient in HDL (VHDL and/or Verilog)
  • Familiarity with designing and coding for re-use, maintainability and scalability
  • Strong understanding of FPGA physical constraints and timing closure
  • Experience designing high-speed digital and mixed signal circuits, including analysis, simulation, test, problem-solving and part selection
  • In-depth knowledge of digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms and communication theory (e.g., filter design, clock recovery, signal detection, channel estimation, and equalization)
  • Experience in product schedule, cost, and delivery management
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering , Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • 15 years of experience in engineering roles supporting complex electronic systems in the aerospace or high-end commercial markets
  • Experience in HVL (System Verilog) for design and verification
  • Ability to design implementations with migration path from vendor specific FPGAs to ASICs
  • Experience with RTL, gate-level simulations, and related debugging
  • Knowledge of a full EDA vendor DFT tool suite like Siements Tessent or similar
  • Knowledge of STA tools like Synopsys Primetime or Cadence Tempus
  • Experience standing up automated build and test systems for FPGA development workflows
  • Experience with AMD/Xilinx Versal family of devices
  • Knowledge of signal-integrity, power, grounding and general board layout principles
  • Ability to review PCB layout and provide guidance for and analysis of signal integrity for high-speed signals such as multi-gigabit SERDES interfaces
  • Current Top Secret or TS/SCI Security clearance
  • Advanced degree ( Master's or Ph.D.) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field
  • Medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, paid parental leave, short and long-term disability, 401(k) with a company match of up to 5%, and an Education Support Program.
