This position spans the Infrastructure Reliability and Platform Engineering domains, with equal responsibility for OpenStack and Rancher-managed Kubernetes environments. The engineer will lead the lifecycle of both platforms, ensuring scalable, secure, and observable foundations that support mission-critical workloads. This role defines how Five9 builds and runs both OpenStack and Kubernetes platforms at scale, ensuring parity in automation, performance, security, and observability. By bridging the two ecosystems, this engineer will enable hybrid flexibility while providing the resilient foundation on which the business depends.

Requirements

  • 7+ years in infrastructure, platform, or SRE engineering roles.
  • Hands-on mastery of both OpenStack and Rancher Kubernetes in production, focusing on automation, lifecycle management, and high availability.
  • Proficiency with Terraform, Ansible, Helm, Argo CD, and scripting in Python/Go/Bash.
  • Deep understanding of Linux internals and system performance.
  • Proven application of SRE practices in high-stakes, always-on environments.
  • Strong experience with observability platforms such as Prometheus, Grafana, and Loki/ELK/EFK.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced networking and scheduling knowledge including VXLAN, BGP, NIC offload, NUMA-aware scheduling, SR-IOV, and PCI passthrough.
  • Experience with OpenStack Magnum integration, Tempest/Rally for upgrades and validation.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes Rancher add-ons (Fleet, Longhorn, CIS Scanning) and security hardening (CKA/CKS).
  • Knowledge of compliance standards such as PCI, FedRAMP, SOC2, FIPS, CIS, and NIST.
  • Contributions to upstream OpenStack or Kubernetes projects.

Responsibilities

  • Designing, automating, and operating multi-tenant clusters across OpenStack components such as Nova, Neutron, Octavia, Manila, Cinder, Ironic, and Glance.
  • Ensuring performance, tenant isolation, and lifecycle automation for OpenStack.
  • Designing and maintaining bare-metal Kubernetes clusters with GitOps-driven automation using tools like Fleet, Argo CD, Terraform, and Helm.
  • Optimizing Kubernetes clusters for performance and securing them with RBAC, network policies, and compliance guardrails.
  • Enabling interoperability between OpenStack and Kubernetes platforms and shared observability stacks using Prometheus, Grafana, and Loki/EFK.
  • Applying SRE principles for capacity planning, high availability, resilience, incident response, and continuous improvement across both platforms.
