Role Summary: As a Senior Design Engineer in the Large Power Systems Division (LPSD), you will play a key role in shaping the concept, development, and design of complex components, subsystems, and processes while strengthening your analytical expertise and engineering mastery. In this role, you will collaborate with global teams, providing technical guidance and leadership. You will contribute to project planning and execution, stay current with emerging technologies, mentor and coach team members, and expand your professional network. This position is part of the Electrical Systems & Controls group in Mossville, Illinois, with responsibility for the design and project management of tasks related to large diesel and gas engines. Projects typically originate as New Product Introduction (NPI) or Continuous Product Improvement (CPI) initiatives and often involve urgent deadlines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology from an accredited college or university.
  • Professional experience in large engine or machine design and development, or in electronics design and component validation.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
  • Analytical Thinking: Extensive knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.
  • Effective Communications: Extensive understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
  • Managing Multiple Priorities: Extensive knowledge of effective self-management practices; ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation.
  • Technical Excellence: Extensive knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.
  • Computer-Aided Design & Engineering: Extensive knowledge of tools and techniques of specialized graphics programs; ability to produce, analyze, simulate and test product design drafts.
  • Product Design - MFG: Extensive knowledge of processes, approaches, tools and techniques of product design; ability to convert customer and market requirements into product design.
  • Product Design and Development: Extensive knowledge of product features; ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Experience in engine application system design (Marine, Petroleum, Machine, Electric Power, Gas, or Aftertreatment).
  • Deep knowledge of Caterpillar Gas and DGB engines.
  • Proven ability to enhance bracket and structural designs using FEA, vibration analysis, FMEA, field failure data, and related findings.
  • Hands-on experience with data communication protocols (CAN, Ethernet, Modbus, etc.).
  • Proficiency in Teamcenter, ProE, Pro-Cable, and CREO (including ProE Schematics).
  • Strong understanding of electrical standards and certifications, including SAE, ANSI, ISO, IEC, NFPA, NEMA, UL, RoHS, and CSA Class 1 Div 2 requirements.
  • Self-starter with demonstrated technical leadership skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information effectively and lead concept design reviews.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both individual and group settings.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills to build cooperative relationships across teams and departments.
  • Proven ability to manage complex assignments, prioritize tasks, and handle multiple projects simultaneously.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and support detailed designs aligned with requirements established through collaboration with engine platform teams.
  • Communicate design requirements and deadlines to offsite engineering detailers to ensure timely delivery.
  • Partner with manufacturing suppliers (APQP), procure prototype materials, and validate functionality through on-engine fit-ups.
  • Assist with field validation activities and resolve warranty-related issues.
  • Present project outcomes to management through stakeholder updates and design reviews.
  • Perform limited travel to Caterpillar facilities and/or customer sites for validation, debugging, and issue resolution.
  • Responsible for Creo design of engine electrical harnesses, enclosures, brackets, and related system components.
  • Design electrical harnesses, brackets, panels, enclosures, telematics, sensor mounts, and engine upgrade kits/solutions for Offshore Petroleum and Marine engines
