Job Summary: The Large Power System Division is currently seeking a Design Engineer who will design, develop, build, and implement new products, components, or technologies. We are looking for a dynamic, organized self-starter to join our Large Power Systems Division's Integrated Drivetrain Friction, Clutch, and Brake Systems team as a Senior Design Engineer in Mossville, IL.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum.
  • Effective Communications: Working knowledge of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
  • Managing Multiple Priorities: Working knowledge of effective self-management practices; ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation.
  • Technical Excellence: Working knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.
  • Computer-Aided Design & Engineering: Extensive knowledge of tools and techniques of specialized graphics programs; ability to produce, analyze, simulate and test product design drafts.
  • Product Design and Development: Extensive knowledge of product features; ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Engineering curriculum, preferably Mechanical, Agricultural, Applied Mechanics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or Metallurgical Engineering curriculum
  • Prior test and product development experience with drivetrain or powertrain components or systems including transmission or brake experience
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written, complemented by the ability to develop and deliver technical presentations.
  • Ability to collect and efficiently organize detailed information.
  • Test, data collection, and analysis capabilities using Minitab and spreadsheet & analytics tools
  • Understanding of Caterpillar engineering drawings

Responsibilities

  • Provide design and project leadership for clutch and brake systems and components in areas including product and process design and development.
  • Work closely with Transmission and Axle platform teams to develop wet clutch and wet and dry brake component and system specifications and product offerings which differentiate Caterpillar Drivetrain products.
  • Ensure product performance and quality for components including: wet and dry friction, reaction plates, rotating seals, springs, and thrust washers.
  • Document and communicate requirements and results to customers, suppliers, team members, and other business units.
  • Contribute to the design, development, and validation of new Drivetrain transmissions, brakes, and controls systems.
  • Support global teams and resources to collaborate on design, manufacturing, and sourcing efforts.
  • Provide technical support for New Technology Introduction (NTI), New Product Introduction (NPI), Continuous Process Improvement (CPI), and Aftermarket projects.
  • Lead matters regarding Concurrent Product and Process Development (CPPD) and Rapid Root Cause and Corrective Actions.
  • Identify innovation and development opportunities and develop proposals for strategic technology project funding.
  • Researching new materials and competitive products.
  • Organizing, coordinating, and executing the building, testing, and analysis of prototypes.
  • Assisting supply specialists and buyers with supplier development and supplier performance.
  • Overseeing the efforts of drafting and testing specialists.
  • Developing and documenting functional requirements and translating into detail design documents.
  • Participating in buy-build analysis for product components.
  • Participating in and supporting proposal preparation, cost estimates, and technical reports.
