About The Position

The Senior Derivative Accountant will support the business by providing accounting and financial reporting oversight for the company’s derivative instruments and hedge accounting activities. This role requires deep technical accounting expertise related to derivatives, strong analytical skills, and the ability to partner cross-functionally with Investments, Treasury, external service providers, and our Ares Capital asset management team. This role reports to the Director of Investment Reporting and is a hybrid working opportunity, required to be onsite three days a week at our Durham, NC headquarters.

Requirements

  • BA /BS in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 5+ years of relevant accounting experience, preferably within insurance, asset management, or financial services
  • Strong understanding of derivative instruments and hedge accounting
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong financial analysis capabilities
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment

Responsibilities

  • Lead month-end close activities for derivative instruments, including valuation, settlements, accruals, and preparation and review of related journal entries
  • Perform hedge accounting activities in accordance with US GAAP, including maintenance of hedge documentation and execution of hedge effectiveness testing
  • Reconcile derivative positions and valuations between investment systems, custodians, and the general ledger; investigate and resolve reconciling items
  • Perform variance analysis on period-over-period changes in balances and P&L
  • Partner closely with Investments and Treasury teams to understand hedging strategies and evaluate accounting implications of new derivative transactions
  • Prepare derivative-related financial statement schedules and disclosures

  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, controls, and automation across derivative accounting, reconciliations, and hedge accounting workflows
