Senior Engineering Data Center Technician We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Datacenter Technician to operate within VIAVI’s dedicated space inside a shared datacenter environment. This role is ideal for a self directed technical professional who thrives working independently, confidently makes informed decisions, and takes full ownership of onsite datacenter operations. You will serve as the technical presence for our engineering and operations teams, ensuring our infrastructure remains reliable, organized, and optimized. This is a high trust, high autonomy position requiring strong judgment, initiative, and the ability to execute with minimal daily supervision. This position will be an on-site position, located in Lynwood, WA.

Requirements

  • Technical degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years combined experience in Linux systems administration, help desk, engineering labs, or datacenter roles.
  • 2+ years hands‑on networking experience demonstrating understanding of physical and logical Ethernet networking.
  • 2+ years data entry or validation experience with strong attention to detail.
  • 2+ years programming or scripting experience (any language).
  • Demonstrated ability to use mechanical tools (powered and unpowered).
  • Proven ability to safely handle and move heavy equipment within a datacenter environment.

Responsibilities

  • Datacenter Operations & Infrastructure Install, remove, migrate, and cable racked equipment including servers, switches, and power distribution units.
  • Perform copper and fiber cabling runs and patching with high accuracy and adherence to standards.
  • Maintain precise and up‑to‑date inventory across equipment, wiring paths, breaker panels, and infrastructure elements.
  • Keep the datacenter space clean, secure, and audit‑ready per corporate and facility standards.
  • Manage e‑waste recycling processes, equipment receiving, shipping, and associated documentation.
  • Technical Troubleshooting & Support Serve as the onsite escalation point when remote engineering support is insufficient—troubleshooting network connectivity, services on Linux servers, proprietary hardware, and other critical systems.
  • Participate in remote meetings or ad‑hoc troubleshooting sessions (audio/video) to provide real‑time onsite assistance.
  • Independently evaluate issues, determine root cause, and execute corrective actions with minimal guidance.
  • Systems, Tools & Automation Track and maintain service contracts, warranties, preventive maintenance schedules, and license renewals.
  • Submit purchase requests for hardware, tools, and renewals as needed.
  • Contribute to infrastructure‑as‑code initiatives using tools such as Ansible, Bash, Python, Terraform, Packer, and PowerShell (training available; prior experience not required).
  • Physical & Logistical Tasks Safely lift and maneuver heavy datacenter equipment using appropriate techniques and tools (server lifts, etc.).
  • Use a personal vehicle occasionally to retrieve or store equipment in an offsite storage unit (mileage reimbursed).
