The Senior Database Administrator is responsible for managing and supporting university-wide ERP application, file and database systems including the performance, integrity and security of those systems. In this role they are involved in installing, upgrading, cloning, and patching of ERP applications. They will plan and develop database architecture, logical and physical design, automation, documentation, installations, shell scripting, backup and recovery concepts, as well as the troubleshooting of any database performance or data integrity issues. As a member of the IT Solutions (ITS) team, the Senior Database Administrator is expected to uphold the division's mission to "empower an agile, digital university and elevate technology as a strategic institutional asset" and contribute positively to a collaborative, human-centered, innovative, accountable, transparent, and inclusive culture within ITS.

  • Designs, develops, implements and clones Oracle file systems, application servers, and databases.
  • Monitors and maintains maximum performance of databases and applications, including Oracle configuration and change controls, components, concurrent requests, system alerts and metrics.
  • Administers and troubleshoots Oracle database, including patching (security, critical, service patching), SQL tuning, capacity planning, and schema design.
  • Develops, manages, and tests back-up and restoration plans as well as disaster recovery plans.
  • Maintains proper configuration management and change controls for database, applications, and file systems.
  • Actively contributes to the creation, development, and maintenance of technical documentation, data standards, procedures and definitions for a university data dictionary.
  • Supports developers with SQL tuning, indexing, partitioning approach to achieve read/write efficiency.
  • Develops administration automation and monitoring scripts as needed.
  • Creates alert and diagnostic monitoring.
  • Supports the organization as needed in a transition from on-premise database systems to cloud database systems.
  • Assumes the additional tasks and skills as needed to support a cloud-based data warehouse, business intelligence, or analytics system.
  • Partners with ITS security to design access permissions and privilege controls.
  • Performs off-hours production support, as needed.
  • Develops an in-depth understanding of the university's ERP systems & databases.
  • Leads and/or participates in design, implementation, and assessment of database-related initiatives and projects, as assigned.
  • Researches, recommends, and pilots innovations in database technology.
  • Takes a lead role in documenting systems and common support procedures and encourages and facilitates cross-training.
  • Stays current with emerging trends and advances in database administration that may have relevance to the university's evolving needs and goals.
  • Continuously evaluates internal processes, procedures, practices, and standards and proactively proposes changes to bring greater efficiencies.
  • Mentors other database administrators and developers in their area.
  • Maintains awareness of current practices and future trends in database technologies, administration, and best practices.
  • Represents IT Solutions and participate in the campus community by serving on working groups, project teams, and university committees.

  • Bachelor's degree required. Additional job-related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Seven years of relevant experience in database development and/or administration. Additional job-related education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Ability to maintain the security and integrity of the infrastructure.
  • Extensive experience with Oracle databases (eg. Oracle 12c, 19c) in many of the following areas: database architecture and design, optimization, performance tuning, performance management (incl troubleshooting issues), patch management (incl application patching), administration, and support.
  • Experience with Unix, Linux, web servers (eg. Weblogic, Tomcat, etc.) installing OEM products and performing administration tasks on those environments.
  • In-depth knowledge of relational database concepts and design principles, and hands-on management and support experience using SQL, PL/SQL, UNIX shell scripting, and/or SQL scripting.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills (including ability to present ideas in user-friendly, business-friendly and technical language) and interpersonal skills with a focus on rapport-building, listening and questioning skills.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities, including ability to anticipate, identify, and solve critical problems.
  • Ability to build effective relationships and strong commitment to working collegially and collaboratively with constituents at all levels in a diverse and distributed environment.
  • Ability to use a personal computer and other office equipment, including related university software and email.
  • Oracle Database Administration certification.
  • Experience managing and supporting Oracle database systems supporting ERP environments such as Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) and/or Ellucian Colleague.
  • Knowledge of ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) architecture and data warehousing technologies and tools (SAS Data Management platform, Informatica, DataStage, SSIS).
  • Experience with data governance.
  • Experience in a higher education setting.
  • Hands on experience with data replication tools.
  • Experience with database migration to the cloud.
  • Familiarity with Texas Administrative Code (TAC 202).
