Our Product Support and Logistics Division (PSLD) is one of the most innovative divisions within Caterpillar. In PSLD, as within all of Caterpillar, our priority is our customers and helping them build a better world. We touch nearly every element of the services value stream. PSLD is responsible for Aftermarket Parts Distribution of Cat Parts, Integrated Logistics and Global Services supporting Caterpillar dealers and customers. Our teams work together in critical areas that leverage digital capabilities, technology and operational excellence. As a Senior Data Scientist, you will apply your expertise in quantitative analysis, data management, workflow automation, modeling, and data visualization as a key team lead on project teams solving complex business problems. This position is a part of the Caterpillar Inventory Management Research Team, which uses quantitative methods such as business simulations, data mining, machine learning, and advanced statistical techniques to solve problems. Additional Information: This role is located in Morton, IL and does not offer relocation or sponsorship This role is 1st Shift: Monday through Friday This role is 100% on-site with no opportunities for hybrid or remote schedules This role requires up to 10% Domestic travel

Requirements

  • Business Statistics: Knowledge of the statistical tools, processes, and practices to describe business results in measurable scales; ability to use statistical tools and processes to assist in making business decisions.
  • Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.
  • Programming Languages: Knowledge of basic concepts and capabilities of programming; ability to use tools, techniques and platforms in order to write and modify programming languages.
  • Query and Database Access Tools: Knowledge of data management systems; ability to use, support and access facilities for searching, extracting and formatting data for further use.
  • Requirements Analysis: Knowledge of tools, methods, and techniques of requirement analysis; ability to elicit, analyze and record required business functionality and non-functionality requirements to ensure the success of a system or software development project.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a quantitative or technical field
  • 5+ years of professional experience applying quantitative analysis
  • Strong proficiency in Python, R, SAS, SQL, and/or Dataiku for statistical modeling and machine learning
  • Knowledge of key principles, technologies, and algorithms, with ability to develop, implement, and deliver ML solutions
  • Experience with AI and agentic/LLM tools such as Copilot Studio, Snowflake Cortex, Sidekick, or LangChain
  • Skilled in automation and app‑building tools (Power Automate, Power Apps, Excel VBA)
  • Proficiency in data visualization tools like Power BI or Tableau
  • Strong written, verbal, and digital communication skills, including data‑driven storytelling
  • Experience in inventory management or parts‑related operations
  • Demonstrated teamwork, initiative, and strong interpersonal skills
  • Passion for big data, research, analytics, and solving complex problems

Responsibilities

  • Conduct analytics‑driven research to support project teams
  • Use tools like Python, R, SAS, SQL, and Dataiku to build models and solve business problems
  • Perform statistical modeling and analyze parts demand and inventory trends
  • Improve existing inventory optimization methods and develop new ones
  • Run and evaluate inventory management simulations
  • Build Power BI dashboards for reporting and exploratory analysis
  • Perform ad‑hoc data processing, analysis, and visualization
  • Develop and refine large‑scale solutions for complex business environments
  • Lead AI automation and agentic AI initiatives to reduce manual work and speed up workflows
  • Provide executive‑level S&OP data analysis to support decision‑making
  • Build advanced forecasting solutions using service event data and other forward‑looking signals
  • Develop expertise in inventory management systems and parts management practices
  • Clearly communicate complex analysis and technical concepts to stakeholders and internal teams
