About The Position

This contract role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to a high-impact research initiative focused on understanding user behavior, traffic patterns, and engagement across digital platforms. You will work with large-scale datasets, apply advanced statistical and causal inference methods, and produce actionable insights to inform product and content strategy. Operating in a collaborative, remote-first environment, you will partner with cross-functional teams to support data-driven decision-making. This position is ideal for a technically proficient data scientist who thrives in ambiguous, fast-moving research projects and wants to make measurable contributions over a defined 16-week engagement. Your work will directly influence understanding of user pathways, content quality, and engagement trends.

Requirements

  • Master’s or PhD in a quantitative field such as statistics, data science, economics, mathematics, or computer science.
  • 6+ years of professional experience in data science or quantitative analysis roles.
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL for large, distributed datasets and Python for data analysis (pandas, numpy, statsmodels, scikit-learn, Jupyter).
  • Experience with time-series modeling, applied causal inference (Diff-in-Diff, event studies), and analyzing log-level behavioral data.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to assess data feasibility, design methodological approaches, and interpret uncertainty.
  • Excellent communication skills for collaborating with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment and manage competing priorities.
  • Experience with GitLab or similar version control and collaboration platforms.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Wikimedia or large-scale content platforms is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct analyses of traffic health, referrer patterns, and visibility trends using time-series and statistical methods.
  • Explore relationships between traffic sources and user engagement, including contribution likelihood and on-platform behavior.
  • Support natural experiments and evaluate the downstream impact of changes in content visibility or platform features.
  • Produce clean, well-documented datasets, summary tables, Jupyter notebooks, and analytical visuals.
  • Document methods, assumptions, and analytical decisions; provide internal briefs or memos summarizing key findings.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Data Engineering, Research & Decision Science, and Product & Technology.
  • Contribute to reproducible workflows and handover materials to ensure continuity of research insights.

Benefits

  • Competitive contract pay aligned with experience and location.
  • Fully remote work with flexible hours overlapping the Eastern Time Zone.
  • Opportunity to work on high-impact, research-driven projects influencing platform strategy.
  • Collaboration with diverse, expert teams in a mission-driven environment.
  • Exposure to advanced analytics, causal inference, and time-series methodologies.
  • Structured handover and documentation to support professional growth and portfolio development.
