About The Position

The Senior Counselor, Athletics Specialist at Binghamton University is a full-time, 12-month renewable position focused on providing mental health counseling and outreach services specifically to Division I student-athletes. This role involves individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and collaboration with athletics staff to address a range of mental health concerns, including stress, anxiety, and performance-related issues. Requirements

  • Master's or Doctorate degree in psychology, social work, mental health counseling, or related clinical field.
  • Licensure to practice in New York, or eligibility for licensure by start date.
  • Generalist clinical skills and experience in assessing and intervening with a range of disorders.
  • Knowledge of the unique needs and challenges of the college student-athlete population.
  • Strong multicultural awareness and skills to work with diverse student populations.
  • Ability to manage a busy caseload and complete administrative tasks.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • LCSW credential, LMHC, or Doctorate in Counseling Psychology or related field.
  • Experience as a collegiate student-athlete or coach.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and professional standards.
  • Experience in a higher education counseling center or with young adults in a clinical setting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide short-term individual and group counseling to student-athletes.
  • Conduct outreach and psychoeducational workshops for student-athletes and athletics staff.
  • Perform crisis counseling and initial assessments for mental health concerns.
  • Establish consultation and liaison relationships with Athletics staff.
  • Address a range of mental health issues including stress, anxiety, and depression.
  • Focus on student-athlete specific issues such as sports performance and injury rehabilitation.
