About The Position

PHINIA is seeking a highly experienced Senior Counsel, Trade Compliance to lead and manage global trade compliance matters. This role requires deep expertise in export controls, sanctions, ITAR/EAR regulations, and international trade laws. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of advising multinational corporations on complex trade compliance issues and implementing robust compliance programs. This role reports to PHINIA’s Chief Compliance Officer.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school; admission to practice law in the U.S.
  • 7+ years of professional experience in trade compliance law, with significant exposure to export controls and sanctions.
  • Deep knowledge of U.S. export control regulations, U.S. and EU sanctions, and global trade laws.
  • Familiarity with product classification systems and licensing processes.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation abilities.
  • Ability to manage complex projects and influence stakeholders at all levels.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience interacting with U.S. government agencies.
  • Prior in-house counsel experience in a global organization.
  • Prior experience in a multinational manufacturing or automotive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the subject matter expert on U.S. and international trade regulations, including sanctions and export control regimes.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain PHINIA’s global trade compliance policies and procedures.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and assess their impact on PHINIA’s operations.
  • Advise senior leadership on trade compliance risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Conduct risk assessments related to export controls, sanctions, and cross-border transactions.
  • Provide guidance on complex licensing requirements and exemptions.
  • Oversee the export control classification of PHINIA products and technology.
  • Manage export license applications and ensure timely approvals.
  • Design and deliver training programs for employees on trade compliance obligations.
  • Promote a culture of compliance across global operations.
  • Lead internal investigations related to potential trade compliance violations.
  • Interface with government agencies during audits, inquiries, or enforcement actions.
  • Prepare voluntary disclosures and manage corrective actions when necessary.
  • Partner with supply chain, procurement, engineering, and sales teams to ensure compliance with export controls and sanctions in day-to-day operations.
  • Support M&A due diligence for trade compliance risks.
