About The Position

Mastercard is seeking a Senior Counsel to join our global law team supporting Mastercard Corporate Security, focusing on driving innovative legal coverage for important technology initiatives and operations while ensuring security is at the heart of everything we do. The team works closely with partners across Mastercard in technology, operations, data privacy, regulatory, public policy, product and regional teams, as well as other colleagues in the law department. This front-line position will interface with internal and external stakeholders and primarily involve providing legal support to Mastercard’s Corporate Security unit (including Mastercard’s Global Fusion & Intelligence, Security Threat and Response Management, technology operations and enterprise architecture), customer and vendor contract negotiations and assessments, regulatory and public policy engagement on cybersecurity matters, information security enterprise certification support, and managing potential technology and security legal risks related to the Mastercard enterprise including its core payments business and acquired businesses, as well as advise on emerging technology matters such as open source, cloud governance, and artificial intelligence. The position will be based in Mastercard’s O’Fallon Tech Hub, and will report to Senior Managing Counsel, Corporate Security.

Requirements

  • Law degree from an established and reputable university.
  • Proficiency in contract drafting and negotiation, and experience in commercial practices generally are required.

  • Demonstrated cybersecurity background in government, law firm, or in-house.
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively identify cyber-related legal risks.
  • Demonstrated a high level of expertise within the cybersecurity discipline.
  • General understanding of regulatory environment, government and law enforcement as it relates to cyber operations, investigations, computer crimes, and cyber threat reporting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with information security laws and regulations and ability to translate that knowledge to deliver relevant and actionable guidance to business.
  • Experience working on policy issues related to information security and threat sharing as it intersects with data privacy and cybersecurity.
  • Experience supporting evolving global cybersecurity programs and knowledge of cybersecurity technology tools and capabilities.
  • Experience with cybersecurity standards, frameworks, risk assessments and certification processes such as ISO and other compliance frameworks, and customer and supplier contract negotiations related thereto.
  • Demonstrate the ability to articulate strategies and define solutions to enable secure platforms, applications, software and cyber architecture.
  • Aside from being a proven individual contributor, must be able to work as part of a team, and have strong collaborative and multi-tasking skills and experience with coordinating cross-functional teams to execute initiatives and transactions.
  • Quick learner, stress resistant, ability to grasp complex new business concepts, good commercial acumen, and creative approach to problem-solving.
  • A proactive, time-sensitive, results-driven approach in carrying out all duties, obligations, and responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for providing high quality, specialized and practical cybersecurity legal advice to Corporate Security and supported business units, providing comprehensive, end-to-end legal support by facilitating thoughtful risk-taking to enable Mastercard to deliver on strategy.
  • Support day-to-day corporate security legal tasks, including partnering with the business and legal specialists to craft and implement policies and procedures; enable execution of applicable laws and regulations that impact cyber and information security; and facilitate commercial operations and activities.
  • Monitor for and communicate changes in cybersecurity laws and regulations, train and educate clients on risks, legal consequences, and alternative actions, as needed.
  • Partner with legal specialists and outside counsel to coordinate research, investigate legal issues, and ensure compliance with cybersecurity regulations.
  • Support engagements with regulators, governmental entities, and law enforcement agencies.
  • Serve as Corporate Security legal specialist in support of customer and vendor contract negotiations.
  • Provide support to Mastercard Corporate Security cyber investigations, incident response management, and cyber intelligence threat reporting.
  • Coach and mentor others while serving as a technology and cybersecurity legal expert, often leading cross-functional strategic initiatives and sharing legal knowledge for a business and/or market.
  • Provide corporate security legal perspective in support of the commercialization and sales efforts of the regional, product, and sales teams.
  • Advise on and provide corporate security-related input on government/commercial legal, regulatory, reputational, and liability matters for new and existing products.
  • Provide subject matter expertise with respect to cybersecurity laws and provide support to product development where requested.
