About The Position

The Senior Corporate Counsel is responsible for a wide range of matters in the legal practice areas of utility regulation, primarily state regulatory matters in Missouri. This position requires the ability to work relatively independently and to offer competent counsel in matters concerning utility regulation. The person selected will join a team that works together to address a high volume of legal and regulatory matters in the state of Missouri and is dedicated to achieving successful resolutions to these matters.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate Degree (J.D.) from an accredited law school required.
  • Ten or more years of experience in a law firm, corporate legal department or other comparable legal setting with experience in an area of specialty required.
  • Licensed and eligible to practice in Missouri and/or Illinois required.
  • Advanced knowledge of legal primary practice area required.
  • Strong organizational, time management, oral advocacy and written communication skills.
  • The Candidate must be proficient and possess diligence to advance matters including docketed proceedings independently, as well as strong interpersonal skills to work effectively in a diverse team.
  • The Candidate should demonstrate agility and organizational skills to manage numerous and sometimes competing responsibilities of varying urgency and criticality within a fast-paced work environment.
  • Proficiency in legal research, Lexis or Westlaw and other applicable research services and the following Ameren competencies: Think Customer, Inspire and Engage, Foster Innovation, Drive Results, Champion Learning, Build Trust, and Be Strategic.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in handling accounting matters related to regulation and rates, rate cases generally, rate design matters, energy efficiency dockets, and/or transmission siting proceedings would be valued.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal representation, advice, or support for the organization as requested by clients, specifically in state administrative dockets before the Missouri Public Service Commission.
  • Work independently to identify risks and issues and recommend solutions to solve complex problems in rate and other proceedings before the MPSC.
  • Oversee or conduct legal research relevant to scope of responsibility.
  • Manage and coordinate outside counsel handling specific proceedings or issues.
  • Lead functional teams or projects.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in area of specialization.
  • Actively engage in informal department management, including training and mentoring less-experienced attorneys and staff, leading department initiatives, identifying and implementing significant process improvements and driving change.
  • Broaden the identification and adoption of continuous improvement opportunities to the Legal Department as a whole.
  • Identify risks and offer solutions for resolving client projects of higher complexity.
  • Routinely provides advice to less-experienced co-workers, assisting them with their assigned projects and helping them build trust and professional relationships throughout the organization.
  • Guide decision making with a regulatory and ratemaking consciousness.
