About The Position

The Global Fiduciary Risk Oversight Team provides independent oversight across M&T Bank’s Institutional Services & Wealth Management (ISWM) division. This role oversees and advises on KYC, CDD, EDD, and AML/sanctions risk management for Corporate Trust & Agency, Institutional Client Services, Personal Trust & Wealth Management, and High-Net-Worth (HNW) and Ultra-High-Net-Worth (UHNW) clients. This role will be the primary liaison between ISWM and the enterprise BSA Group on KYC.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • 10 years in banking, compliance, fiduciary risk, wealth management, or related fields.
  • A combined minimum of 14 years higher education and/or work experience, including 10 in banking, compliance, fiduciary risk, wealth management, or related fields.
  • Deep expertise in KYC/CDD/EDD, AML/CTF, OFAC, fiduciary law, trust structures, and wealth management oversight.
  • Experience with investment advisory, private banking, discretionary portfolios, and alternative investments.
  • Strong analytical and investigatory capabilities.
  • Advanced understanding of fiduciary relationships and trust law.
  • Excellence in communication, influence, and cross-functional leadership.
  • Ability to manage complexity across institutional and personal wealth environments.
  • Minimum of 5 years managerial or supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, measure, and escalate compliance risk issues to the Compliance Director and/or the Lines of Business (LOBs) as necessary.
  • Assist in oversight of state, federal, domestic and possibly international regulator relationships and examinations including the Federal Reserve, OCC, SEC, DOL, FINRA, CFPB, State of New York, and/or the State of Delaware, as applicable.
  • Implement and execute on strategic priorities for the group, potentially impacting the enterprise, assist to implement the priorities, and ensure ongoing compliance across the enterprise.
  • Develop, implement, maintain and enhance internal controls to mitigate risk on an ongoing basis.
  • Manage and maintain enterprise-wide policies, standards, and procedures designed to achieve compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations
  • Evaluate and advise on new/revised products and services from a compliance risk perspective for assigned areas
  • Maintain internal control standards, including timely support for implementation of internal and external audits, examinations, investigations, or supervisory events
  • Work with the Compliance Director to engage other Risk Departments, Internal Audit, Legal and/or Regulatory Affairs regarding interrelated risk issues impacting operational, credit, strategic, reputation, market, liquidity, interest rate and capital risks
  • Assist in the development of enterprise-wide policies, standards, and procedures designed to achieve compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations
  • Interacts with State and Federal Regulatory Agencies, numerous risk and executive management, lines of business, and support organizations such as Internal Audit and Legal on an ongoing and regular basis to ensure the enterprise is operating within the Board-mandated compliance risk tolerance.
  • KYC / CDD / EDD - Lead onboarding and periodic reviews across Trust, Corporate Agency, and Wealth Management clients.
  • Assess beneficial ownership structures, source of wealth, source of funds, and expected activity.
  • Coordinate 1LOD activities related to EDD for complex entities, cross-border clients, family offices, SPVs, private investment vehicles, and trust structures.
  • Evaluate complex wealth structures including family LLCs, irrevocable trusts, foundations, donor-advised funds, and UHNW portfolios.
  • Assess high-risk investment behaviors and product exposure.
  • Monitor consistency between investment objectives and AML risk.
  • Review escrow agreements, trust indenture documents, paying agent flows, and investment authority.
  • Assess transaction risks related to debt issuance, escrow disbursements, custody movements, and successor trustee transitions.
  • Serve as primary liaison for AML/BSA/OFAC matters.
  • Oversee requests for information related to trust, agency, and wealth transactions.
  • Identify emerging risks tied to sanctions evasion, misuse of fiduciary accounts, and offshore structures and escalate to BSA Group.
  • Develop business-line KYC/AML standards tailored to ISWM.
  • Prepare reports for ISWM leadership covering risk trends, escalations, and themes.
  • Support, with support from the BSA Group, AML related regulatory exams across OCC, FRB, FINRA, SEC, and state fiduciary supervisors.
  • Deliver AML/KYC training tailored to fiduciary, trust, and wealth teams.
  • Promote a culture of risk awareness, ethical standards, and fiduciary responsibility.
  • Manage KYC/AML specialists across ISWM.
  • Oversee execution quality, coaching, and capability-building.
