Senior Commercial Counsel

LaurelSan Francisco, CA

About The Position

Laurel is on a mission to return time. As the leading AI Time platform for professional services firms, we’re transforming how organizations capture, analyze, and optimize their most valuable resource: time. Our proprietary machine learning technology automates work time capture and connects time data to business outcomes, enabling firms to increase profitability, improve client delivery, and make data-driven strategic decisions. We serve many of the world's largest accounting and law firms, including EY, Aprio, Crowell & Moring, and Frost Brown Todd, and process over 1 billion work activities annually that have never been collected and aggregated before Laurel’s AI Time platform. Our team comprises top talent in AI, product development, and engineering—innovative, humble, and forward-thinking professionals committed to redefining productivity in the knowledge economy. We're building solutions that empower workers to deliver twice the value in half the time, giving people more time to be creative and impactful. If you're passionate about transforming how people work and building a lasting company that explores the essence of time itself, we'd love to meet you. We’re hiring a Senior Commercial Counsel to own the legal side of Laurel’s revenue engine. This role sits at the intersection of Legal, Sales, and Finance, partnering directly with our Go-To-Market team to structure, negotiate, and close enterprise deals. You will operate less like a traditional legal reviewer and more like a core member of the revenue organization—balancing risk with speed, shaping deals, and enabling Laurel to win. You will also run Laurel’s deal desk, acting as the central point of coordination across Legal, Sales, Finance, and Product to drive alignment, resolve issues quickly, and keep deals moving. This is a hands-on, high-velocity role. You will be in the flow of deals daily, making real-time judgment calls and helping the business move forward. At the same time, you will help build an AI-native legal function, using automation, tooling, and data to increase speed, consistency, and leverage across contracting workflows.

Requirements

  • 5–10+ years of experience with significant exposure to technology transactions and SaaS contracting
  • Proven experience negotiating enterprise agreements in a fast-paced environment (law firm and/or in-house)
  • Commercially wired: you understand revenue, margins, and deal mechanics—not just legal risk
  • Deal-oriented: you enjoy negotiating and helping close business
  • Operator mindset: you like owning processes, driving alignment, and getting deals across the finish line
  • Pragmatic and fast-moving: you make decisions quickly with incomplete information
  • AI-forward mindset: you actively look for ways to use AI and automation to improve how legal work gets done
  • Comfortable working directly with Sales and GTM teams in high-velocity environments
  • Strong communicator who can simplify complex issues and drive alignment
  • JD (or equivalent) and active bar membership

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end negotiation of SaaS and subscription agreements with enterprise customers
  • Handle complex deal terms across pricing, SLAs, data usage, security, and risk allocation
  • Drive deals forward with urgency while maintaining strong business judgment
  • Act as the central driver of deal execution, coordinating across Sales, Finance, Product, Security, and Legal
  • Triage incoming deals, identify risks and blockers early, and drive resolution quickly
  • Establish clear processes and escalation paths to keep deals moving efficiently
  • Bring structure and visibility to the deal pipeline without adding unnecessary process
  • Work closely with Sales and Finance leadership on deal structuring and negotiation strategy
  • Help shape pricing, packaging, and commercial models, including AI-enabled offerings
  • Contribute to how Laurel wins strategic accounts—not just how contracts are papered
  • Build and refine contracting playbooks, templates, and fallback positions
  • Identify patterns across negotiations and continuously improve contracting efficiency
  • Reduce friction in the deal process while maintaining standards
  • Use AI tools and automation to draft, review, and negotiate contracts more efficiently
  • Identify opportunities to reduce cycle time and eliminate repetitive work
  • Help design scalable, AI-enabled workflows across intake, redlining, approvals, and knowledge management
  • Contribute to a culture of measuring and improving legal productivity
  • Make real-time, decisions that balance commercial opportunity and risk aligned with Laurel’s business goals
  • Distinguish between theoretical legal risk and practical commercial impact
  • Enable the business to move fast without introducing unnecessary friction
  • Equip Sales with clear positions and guidance to handle common legal objections
  • Partner with Finance, Product, and Security to align on deal terms
  • Translate legal constraints into commercially workable solutions

Benefits

  • significant funding from renowned venture capitalists (Google Ventures, IVP, Anthos, Upfront Ventures), as well as notable individuals like Marc Benioff, Gokul Rajaram, Kevin Weil, and Alexis Ohanian
  • A smart, fun, collaborative, and inclusive team
  • Great employee benefits, including equity and 401K
  • Bi-annual, in-person company off-sites, in unique locations, to grow and share time with the team
  • An opportunity to perform at your best while growing, making a meaningful impact on the company's trajectory, and embodying our core values: understanding your "why," dancing in the rain, being your whole self, and sanctifying time
