About The Position

The Senior College Laboratory Technician (CLT) in the Department of Art at Brooklyn College is responsible for overseeing the photography area, which includes managing the darkroom, film processing room, classroom, and digital printing room. This role involves performing complex technical functions, maintaining safety standards, and supervising laboratory staff to support coursework effectively.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma with a minimum of eight years' related experience
  • An Associate's degree may substitute for two years' experience
  • A Bachelor's degree may substitute for four years' experience
  • Ability to supervise others

Responsibilities

  • Maintains, fabricates, modifies, and repairs equipment
  • Determines equipment requirements, prepares purchase specifications, and coordinates acquisitions
  • Trains and supervises College Laboratory Technicians, College Assistants, and other laboratory staff
  • Manages set up, maintenance, and organization of student laboratories
  • Maintains safety and hygiene standards
  • Documents laboratory activities
  • Sets up chemistry and equipment prior to classes and breaks it down and cleans up after classes
  • Attends photography classes and open studios
  • Ensures safe disposal and replenishment of all exhausted photographic chemistry and proper waste management
  • Prepares all chemicals used by the students
  • Supervises open hours and keeps records of student attendance
  • Ensures that the photography area stays up-to-date with modern equipment and digital processes
  • Educates students and faculty in safe darkroom procedures and maintains health and safety protocols
  • Helps clean, organize, repair, and maintain the equipment and facility
  • Oversees darkroom renovations and monitors the ventilation system
  • Orders supplies and learns CUNY purchasing systems
  • Maintains an inventory of all materials to support lab work for students
  • Identifies vendors for repair and replacement of equipment and develops cost estimates for maintenance.
