About The Position

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service. Overview Joby Aviation is seeking a passionate self motivated individual to join our Composite Rapid Development team. This individual will be responsible for programming, machining, and routing processes that transform early-stage concepts into functional prototypes, enabling teams to derisk and validate their designs as quickly as possible to move into production.

Requirements

  • 5-axis CNC programming/machining experience
  • HS Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Fusion 360 experience (primary shop software); experience with other CAM platforms considered
  • Strong GD&T knowledge
  • Experience machining diverse materials: MDF, tooling board, aluminum alloys, steel, titanium, ceramics, composites, and engineered materials
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced everchanging environment with aggressive timelines
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills
  • Ability to lift 50lbs unaided

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with mold machining, stamping dies, or general toolmaking
  • Assembly and mechanical systems experience
  • Understanding of material characteristics and ability to research material properties
  • Peripheral knowledge of adjacent manufacturing processes

Responsibilities

  • Perform DFM review of incoming designs; communicate issues to designers and press for clarity on function-critical details
  • Plan and execute jobs autonomously: stock selection, cutter selection, workholding strategy
  • Manage job queue and prioritize to maximize spindle uptime
  • Maintain purchasing authority for tooling, workholding, and stock
  • Follow jobs through downstream operations to understand how machined tools perform in composite layup
  • Collaborate on workflow development to maximize efficiency while maintaining traceability and transparent timelines
