The mission of the Marin County Department of Public Works is to provide quality services and maintain and improve public infrastructure and facilities, while protecting Marin's natural resources. Under direction, the Senior Civil Engineer, plans, manages, and coordinates the engineering program. Using broad parameters of departmental policy guidelines, this position exercises substantial initiative, judgment, and expertise to meet program and project outcomes. The Senior Civil Engineer creates the scope on large civil engineering projects with complex budgets and timelines, integrating numerous elements that significant stakeholder involvement and sensitivity. This position provides direction and mentorship to more junior staff and oversees both technical and administrative work performed by their staff and ensures that projects are completed efficiently and effectively for the public good. Informing the public and Board of Supervisors, selecting consultants, preparing contract documents, reviewing project plans and specifications prepared by consultants, and administering contracts during construction are performed by the Senior Civil Engineer.

Requirements

  • Four years of increasingly responsible professional engineering experience.
  • At least one year of the required professional experience must have included functioning in a supervisory capacity or managing a project.
  • Registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in local government or working with local governments on particular projects.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of pavement management and maintenance.
  • Understanding of drainage and stormwater management.
  • Education and formal training in civil engineering and related fields including certifications in specific disciplines.
  • General construction principles and practices.
