About The Position

The Senior Chemist is responsible for conducting chemical analyses and leading laboratory operations within the Arkansas Department of Health. This role involves supervising laboratory staff, performing quantitative and qualitative analyses, and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations. The position requires strong analytical skills and the ability to manage laboratory equipment and processes effectively.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in chemistry or equivalent education.
• Three years of experience in a chemistry laboratory, including one year in a leadership capacity.
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of chemistry and chemical analysis.
• Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing chemical laboratories.

Responsibilities

• Conduct chemical analyses and act as lead Chemist.
• Supervise laboratory, clinical, environmental, and administrative staff by assigning and prioritizing work assignments.
• Plan, organize, coordinate, and conduct professional level quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses.
• Set up equipment for analysis, calibrate instruments, and prepare standard solutions and reagents.
• Maintain lab equipment and instruments, including glassware using specified cleaning techniques.
• Conduct proficiency tests of laboratories and institutions for quality control of testing programs.
• Audit lab records of law enforcement agencies, petroleum industry, independent laboratories, and hospitals for compliance with regulations.
• Appear in court to explain and/or verify analytical results when disputed.
