About The Position

Applied Research Associates, Inc. is seeking a Senior Chemist to lead projects focused on the modernization of explosives and energetic materials production facilities. This role requires a strong technical background and the ability to coordinate with various stakeholders, including federal entities and subject matter experts, to provide innovative solutions in a high-hazard chemical environment. The ideal candidate will have experience in analytical techniques and project management, ensuring safety and quality in all operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's in Chemistry (or equivalent) with 5-7 years of experience, or a Master's with 3-5 years of experience.
  • Experience in a wide variety of analytical techniques for monitoring solvated and crystallized synthetic small molecule production.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and prioritization.
  • Ability to provide clear written and oral briefings tailored for specific audiences.
  • Support development of test plans, reports, presentations, and standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain qualification in chemical, radiation, and laser safety, and explosive handling as mandated by facility procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with the production, handling, processing, and design of energetic materials related to defense applications.
  • Process engineering and integration knowledge.
  • Knowledge of quality requirements and system qualification.
  • Experience managing production modernization projects, including new capabilities design and development.
  • Active DOD or DOE security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and vision for safe and cost-effective execution of production capabilities for energetic materials and related applications.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with client representatives and key decision makers to achieve client satisfaction.
  • Learn synthetic pathways for producing energetic materials and their precursors quickly.
  • Utilize traditional analytical techniques (TGA, GC-MS, various spectroscopies) effectively.
  • Understand mass and heat transport in chemical process systems.
  • Engage in continuous learning to ensure technical competence.
  • Ensure proper execution of the project including planning, scheduling, and procurements as per customer requirements.
  • Develop, plan, and execute goals and objectives in conjunction with project managers that support client objectives.
  • Implement safety and quality programs by all project staff and ensure business practices align with contract terms.
