The Senior Chemical Engineer at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a principal technical leader within the Chemical & Biological Processing Group. This role focuses on catalysis, process development, and reaction engineering, aiming to transform underutilized carbon sources into sustainable materials, chemicals, and fuels. The engineer will drive strategic planning, manage research priorities, and lead interdisciplinary projects while mentoring other scientists and engineers.

  • Drive PNNL strategic planning and definition of research priorities in Chemical and Biological Processing research efforts
  • Build strong multidisciplinary R&D teams to address scientific and technological challenges
  • Develop strategy and manage day-to-day science and technology activities
  • Lead scoping, scheduling, and budgeting of complex interdisciplinary projects
  • Publish as primary or contributing author on high-impact publications or reports
  • Lead national and international professional activities and external collaborations
  • Mentor other Laboratory scientists and engineers and assist in attracting top talent to PNNL
  • Select and develop technical approaches to complex challenges
  • Develop and realize new significant project opportunities
  • Demonstrate ability to acquire funding for self and task level teams
  • Serve as a role model for quality, safety, and security
  • BS/BA and 7+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • MS/MA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • PhD with 3+ years of relevant experience
  • Expertise in heterogenous catalysis, chemical or biological process development, and/or reaction engineering
  • Extensive experience in petrochemical process development
  • Proven experience in translating stakeholder needs into research programs
  • Demonstrated ability in developing, proposing, and leading new projects
  • Excellent communication skills, with experience delivering compelling communications to varied audiences
  • Significant experience supporting and managing safe operations of engineering scale systems
  • Experience in leading complex interdisciplinary projects
  • Strong publication record in high-impact journals
