About The Position

We're seeking an experienced & highly motivated Senior Manager Captive Insurance Operations to join JM Family's growing Enterprise Risk team. This position presents a distinctive opportunity to lead the creation and execution of a robust insurance strategy across multiple entities. It blends financial stewardship with strategic decision-making, directly enhancing associate well-being and contributing to the organization's long-term resilience and operational effectiveness. With the ability to influence strategy and drive innovation, the role also offers the chance to expand the captive(s) into new areas for meaningful impact. The individual in this role will provide strategic direction and operational leadership to drive expansion and growth for a multi-line captive insurance program that includes both first- and third-party coverage. Responsibilities include designing and managing risk-financing strategies and spearheading cross-functional initiatives to optimize program performance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Business Administration, Economics, Accounting, or Finance (preferred). Advanced degree (MBA or JD) highly preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in risk management, captive insurance, brokerage, or underwriting. Underwriting experience is strongly preferred.
  • CPCU, CCI, CRM or ARM highly preferred.
  • Minimum 7 years of leadership experience in a large, global corporate environment.
  • In-depth understanding of captive insurance structures, including formation, governance, and regulatory compliance.
  • Expertise in first- and third-party coverage, reinsurance, and risk-financing strategies.
  • Strong grasp of insurance policy language, terms, and conditions.
  • Familiarity with industry regulations, audit standards, and compliance frameworks.
  • Proficiency in underwriting principles, reserve adequacy, and actuarial methodologies.
  • Solid knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting, including pro forma financials and cost-benefit analysis.
  • Understanding of legal and tax implications related to insurance structures and captive domiciles.
  • Strategic planning and execution of business plans for captive programs.
  • Advanced analytical skills to assess financial performance and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Ability to evaluate risk exposure and design tailored coverage solutions.
  • Proven leadership in cross-functional team management and capability building.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, including collaboration with senior leadership and external partners.
  • Effective vendor management, including contract negotiation and performance oversight.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills for board-level reporting and internal advisories.
  • Skilled in project management, coordinating renewals, audits, and strategic initiatives.
  • Proficiency in insurance and financial systems, Excel, and reporting tools; familiarity with data visualization platforms is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, expansion, consolidation and ongoing management of the captive insurance entities.
  • Oversee formation, governance, and regulatory compliance across all captive structures.
  • Align captive operations with broader corporate risk management and financial goals.
  • Act as the subject matter expert, advising internal teams on coverage and risk mitigation.
  • Manage underwriting, reserve adequacy, budgeting, and financial reporting.
  • Develop and maintain forecasting tools and financial controls to support transparency and decision-making.
  • Analyze financial performance and prepare business cases for senior leadership.
  • Coordinate new placements and renewals with brokers, consultants, and insurers.
  • Oversee policy administration, claims management, and reinsurance documentation.
  • Supports the development of strategic and tactical plans for new and evolving insurance programs.
  • Build and maintain relationships with reinsurers, TPAs, captive managers, actuaries, investment bankers, and advisors.
  • Negotiate service agreements to ensure operational efficiency and financial performance.
  • Ensure full regulatory compliance across all captive operations.
  • Maintain documentation, internal controls, and audit preparedness.
  • Support government filings, annual audits, and board meeting preparation.
  • Potentially build and lead a team to support growth and service delivery.
  • Collaborate with operating companies to produce monthly reports and recommend structural changes.
  • Increase stakeholder awareness and engagement with insurance programs through education and stewardship.
  • Work closely with brokers, reinsurers, and legal/tax counsel to evaluate insurance products and policy terms.
  • Coordinate feasibility studies and implementation plans for new programs.
  • Continuously identify areas for improvement and innovation within the captive structure.
  • Manage premium billing, collateral requirements, and claims support.
  • Communicate with regulators regarding program changes.
  • Support the Director Corporate Insurance Services in all captive-related matters.
  • Participate in board meetings and contribute to enhancing departmental visibility and value.
