About The Position

THE CITY OF OCEANSIDE IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER. The City of Oceanside is accepting applications for Senior Building Inspector. The Senior Building Inspector leads and manages the Building Inspection Team and oversees the most technical building inspections in the field to ensure conformance with established building codes. This position provides functional and technical supervision of the Building Inspection staff in the enforcement of building, mechanical, plumbing, and electric codes and regulations governing the construction process.

  • Maintain complete and accurate records of inspections.
  • Perform building inspection duties on the most complex projects under construction.
  • Respond to requests, complaints and inquiries from the general public.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in building inspection, including experience with complex residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects. Experience should demonstrate increasing responsibility, including lead or supervisory duties, and comprehensive knowledge of building codes, regulations, and inspection procedures.
  • Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
  • License, Certificate : Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.
  • Possession of the following valid ICC certifications (Minimum Requirements) Commercial Building Inspector - B2 Residential Building Inspector -B1

Responsibilities

  • Research building codes, product listings and manuals; maintain code and standards references.
  • Meets with and advises architects, engineers, contractors, homeowners and the public regarding building projects.
  • Responds to questions and inquiries and interprets City building codes and regulations.
  • Interprets building code issues with building inspection and code enforcement staff.
  • The Senior Building Inspector provides functional and technical supervision of the Building Inspector staff, including assigning, monitoring, and reviewing the work of the inspection team.
  • This role trains staff in building inspection methods, procedures, and techniques, serving as a resource and providing guidance as needed.
  • The Senior Building Inspector develops and delivers training programs, plans and schedules work assignments, and recommends staffing and equipment needs.
  • The position performs inspections of complex commercial tenant improvements, large residential developments, and custom homes.
  • In addition, the Senior Building Inspector research building codes, product listings, and technical manuals, maintaining up-to-date code and standards references.
  • The role involves meeting with and advising architects, engineers, contractors, homeowners, and the public regarding building projects, responding to inquiries, and interpreting City building codes and regulations.
  • The Senior Building Inspector also collaborates with code enforcement staff to clarify and resolve building code issues.

  • Safety Shoes The City will provide reimbursement up to $200 towards the purchase price of safety shoes to employees who are required to wear such shoes on the job.
  • Uniforms The City will provide an annual uniform allowance, for any public safety employee required to wear one, in the amount of $475.
