About The Position

The Department of Social Services (DSS) is comprised of the administrative units of the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS). HRA is dedicated to fighting poverty and income inequality by providing New Yorkers in need with essential benefits such as Food Assistance and Emergency Rental Assistance. DHS is committed to preventing and addressing homelessness in New York City by employing a variety of innovative strategies to help families and individuals successfully exit shelter and return to self-sufficiency as quickly as possible. General Support Services (GSS)/ Facilities Operations/Bureau of Building Services/Division of Custodial & Environmental Health/Safety Services/Custodial Services is recruiting for a Custodian III to function as a Senior Building Custodian.

Requirements

  • Two years of full-time satisfactory experience in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings.
  • To be assigned to Assignment Level II, candidates must have three years of satisfactory experience as described in the 'Qualification Requirements' above.
  • To be assigned to Assignment Level III and IV candidates must have four years of satisfactory experience as described in the 'Qualification Requirements' above.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise custodial staff in various titles, including building custodians, assistant building custodians, junior building custodians and custodial assistants who perform building cleaning and maintenance tasks.
  • Inspect building to determine whether cleaning and maintenance services have been adequately provided and note deficiencies to be corrected and any repairs which must be made.
  • Schedule work of subordinates and make adjustments when necessary.
  • Requisition and issue supplies to subordinate custodial staff.
  • Arrange for the opening and closing of building, ensuring that City property is secure.
  • Report on the performance of contract staff.
  • Train and arrange training for staff.
