About The Position

This position assists in the development, implementation, and administration of the Bridge Management System (BMS) and the formulation of bridge maintenance/management policies. The incumbent attends the annual national American Association of State Highway Officials (AASHTO) Ware Bridge Management (BrM) Users Group meetings and keeps abreast of developing bridge maintenance/management trends and practices. The incumbent assists in the bi-annual publication of the Structural Services Manual and related documents and policies and provides technical support and training for the Structural Information Management System (SIMS), SIMSCounty and SIMSLink.

Requirements

  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Four years of experience in civil engineering.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Occasional statewide and out of state travel with overnight stays.
  • Successful completion of a background screening.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position. As a result, the employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) or may be subject to a fine.

Responsibilities

  • Works with the Bridge Management System (BMS) and develops and presents reports to the districts showing appropriate bridge actions and bridge management network scenarios to assist them in making bridge maintenance decisions with a limited budget.
  • Keeps abreast with National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and technological developments relating to bridge inspection and bridge management.
  • Develops and disseminates maintenance cost data and creates and updates deterioration models as inputs for a comprehensive BMS.
  • Provides training to district personnel in the use and operation of the BMS software.
  • Keeps abreast of current research and publications regarding bridge management and makes recommendations to implement new ideas in the Illinois Department of Transportation’s (IDOT) BMS.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
