Senior Avionics Engineer

Electra AeroManassas, VA
Onsite

About The Position

At Electra, we're building the EL9 - a nine-passenger, hybrid-electric aircraft that takes off and lands in 150 feet. Our Ultra Short technology unlocks thousands of new operating locations and enables what we call Direct Aviation: quiet, point-to-point regional travel that gets people from where they are to where they want to go, without the congestion of major airports or the noise of conventional aviation. A global company, headquartered in Manassas, VA, Electra is backed by Lockheed Martin, Honeywell, and Safran, has filed for FAA Part 23 type certification, and carries 2,000+ intent to purchase from operators worldwide. We're a team of ~100 people moving fast toward first EL9 test flights in 2027 and certification by late 2029 or 2030. Every hire matter at this stage - and this role is no exception. Electra is seeking a Senior Avionics Engineer to support the development of avionics and low voltage electrical systems for Electra's EL9 Ultra Short aircraft. This role will focus on the design, analysis, integration and testing of avionics (indicating and recording, guidance and navigation, cockpit systems, communications) and/or low voltage electrical systems (electrical power, lighting, air vehicle wiring). This is an incredible opportunity to make a direct impact on a cutting-edge development program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline with at least 12 years of relevant experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Direct hands-on experience in some aspect of development of avionics systems, low-voltage electrical systems, or related components for aircraft.
  • A solid understanding of electrical circuits, power systems, sensors, communication systems, navigation, and flight control systems.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and regulations (e.g., DO-254, DO-160, MIL-STD-1553, etc.).
  • Experience in system-level testing, such as bench tests, integration tests, and/or flight tests. Familiarity with test procedures and tools used for avionics and electrical systems.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional, team-oriented environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with certification of avionics and electrical systems for a FAA Part 23 aircraft program.
  • Experience across the full life-cycle development of aircraft systems, from initial design and analysis to testing, certification, and operational monitoring.
  • Experience working on fly-by-wire and/or electric propulsion aircraft systems.
  • Licensed private pilot.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design, analysis, integration and testing of avionics (indicating and recording, guidance and navigation, cockpit systems, communications) and/or low voltage electrical systems (electrical power, lighting, air vehicle wiring).
  • Support evaluation, selection and oversight of suppliers for avionics and electrical equipment.
  • Understand program objectives and requirements to conduct trade studies and define architectures, requirements, and interfaces between systems.
  • Create detailed engineering documentation for design, testing, and certification, including schematics, wiring diagrams, specifications, and test reports.
  • Develop and design system interfaces, ensuring that all components communicate effectively with each other.
  • Prepare and present gated design reviews to demonstrate the adequacy of the design.
  • Develop and execute tests to validate the performance, reliability, and safety of electrical and avionics systems.
  • Provide hands-on support for avionics and electrical system integration and test activities.
  • Collaborate with program management, other IPTs, and functional groups to accomplish team goals.
  • Address and resolve complex engineering challenges, using a combination of technical expertise and problem-solving skills.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams consisting of engineering, operations, program leadership, suppliers and certification leads, to ensure successful project execution.
