The equal opportunity officer is responsible for the development and coordination of the Department’s equal opportunity and affirmative action programs and for the development and implementation of the Department’s civil rights compliance monitoring and technical assistance programs. These responsibilities entail coordination with department units as well as the regional workforce boards to ensure compliance with the nondiscrimination regulations applicable to recipients of federal financial assistance. This responsibility extends to all areas: application for employment; application for programs and services; and program participation and service delivery. Some out-of-town travel may be necessary. The equal opportunity officer is accountable for the fulfillment of equal-opportunity requirements and achievement of employment objectives established by the Department in compliance with federal and state laws and implementing regulations. The equal opportunity officer is also responsible for ensuring that appropriate training opportunities are available to Department staff, at all grade levels and in all occupational areas, on a nondiscriminatory basis and that civil rights program-related training is an integral part of the Department and other recipient programs. The Department’s Office of General Counsel works closely with the Department’s divisions and various program areas to provide legal assistance and advice that is responsive to the specific needs of the Department, division, or program area. The Office of General Counsel serves the entire Department in many different capacities including rendering legal advice and opinions to Department staff in the areas of Economic Development, Community Development, Workforce Services, Human Resources, Reemployment Assistance, and Finance and Administration.
