About The Position

The Senior Attorney / Assistant Attorney position within the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) involves a range of legal responsibilities related to environmental law and policy. Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited law school with an LLB or JD degree.
• Eligibility to take the New York State Bar examination.
• Strong advocacy, research, and writing skills.
• Excellent communication skills in person, writing, and on the telephone.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in environmental law or related fields.
• Familiarity with freshwater wetlands, fish and wildlife, and hazardous substances.

Responsibilities

• Negotiate and implement enforcement matters including Orders of consent.
• Represent the Department at permit and enforcement hearings.
• Assist the Attorney General in litigation involving the Department.
• Respond to Freedom of Information Law requests.
• Communicate effectively with the regulated public, other agencies, co-workers, and court officers.
