About The Position

The Senior Associate Underwriter for Excess & Umbrella is responsible for evaluating, analyzing, and underwriting renewal business accounts for the excess & umbrella line of business. This role supports the achievement of profitable growth and risk management objectives and working closely with agents and internal team members to deliver market-leading insurance solutions. The role involves analyzing risk, negotiating terms, and ensuring compliance with company guidelines along with supporting operational needs within the underwriting division. The position requires strong analytical skills, strong desk management skills and the ability to build relationships with brokers, clients and team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Insurance, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of underwriting experience in Property & Casualty &/or Excess & Umbrella line of business.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation abilities.
  • Proficiency with underwriting systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Nice To Haves

  • Established retail agent relationships preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Risk Assessment: Analyze applications, financial statements, loss histories, and other relevant data to determine risk acceptability and pricing.
  • Underwriting Decisions: Make sound underwriting decisions within authority limits, referring complex cases to senior underwriters or management as needed.
  • Portfolio Management: Monitor and manage assigned book of business to ensure profitability and compliance with company guidelines.
  • Broker/Agent Relations: Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and agents, providing responsive service and expert guidance.
  • Documentation: Ensure accurate and thorough documentation of underwriting decisions, correspondence, and policy information in company systems.
  • Compliance: Adhere to regulatory requirements, company guidelines and underwriting standards.
  • Collaboration: Work with internal teams (claims, actuarial, legal, etc.) to resolve issues and support business objectives.
  • Market Intelligence: Stay current on industry trends, competitor products and market conditions.
  • Continuous Improvement: Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance underwriting expertise and contribute to process improvements.
