About The Position

The Enterprise IP team within the Legal Department is a highly collaborative unit, focused on integrating intellectual property as a core strategic element for Capital One's ambitious business endeavors that are driven by rapid technological progress. This team works closely with business partners to offer strategic IP guidance and specialized expertise. Their goal is to meticulously manage all aspects of IP, ensuring alignment with the Company's business objectives and technology initiatives. The Enterprise IP team also runs the OnePatents Patent Program, which is dedicated to cultivating an inventive culture throughout all levels and teams of the company, in order to fuel Capital One's leading patent portfolio in the industry. The IP Paralegal will serve as the primary point of contact and liaison between the IP team and outside counsel for all administrative patent and trademark matters. The IP Paralegal will act as a critical partner and close collaborator with outside counsel paralegals to ensure correct, timely, and consistent adherence to our outside counsel guidelines for matter management, data quality, and billing policies. This role will also provide critical support for internal Patent Program processes and initiatives including generation of detailed reporting and analysis for internal stakeholders. The candidate is expected to be a creative, proactive problem solver and doer, skilled at working successfully with various stakeholders, detail oriented, and passionate about the invention culture at Capital One.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent certification
  • At least 2 years of experience with end-to-end patent matter management
  • At least 2 years of experience in a project management or process management role

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree or military experience
  • Experience working with Anaqua or other patent management tools
  • Strong reporting capabilities (e.g. Google Sheets)
  • Strong data analysis skills and tool development (e.g., Google Data Studio, SQL)
  • Design and communications experience (e.g. with internal communications and creative initiatives)
  • Strong communication, organization, problem solving and strategic thinking skills
  • Ability to interact with all levels of the organization and outside counsel partners
  • A self-starter that is a proactive problem spotter and creative in identifying solutions

Responsibilities

  • Oversee outside counsel paralegal operations for matter opening, data entry, and invoicing
  • Oversee billing operations for correctness and adherence to outside counsel requirements
  • Manage internal administrative IP operations and processes including preparing data for Patent Program incentive plan
  • Lead and improve processes and projects internally and with outside counsel designed to drive efficiency and effectiveness
  • Partner with outside counsel and third-party vendors to optimize functionality of patent management tool and ensure accurate data management
  • Support IP team and business partners and stakeholders with data reporting and program analytics
  • Build and execute mechanisms for measuring and reporting program effectiveness, and other key metrics
