We serve an area totaling 710 square miles, with over 1,190 schools and educational centers, and we employ over 74,000 individuals, making us one of the largest employers in our city.   A Senior Insulator/Asbestos Abatement Worker plans, reviews, and estimates asbestos and lead abatement jobs or assists in scheduling and directing asbestos and lead based paint abatement, in-place lead management, and insulation activities and personnel.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency, preferably supplemented by successful completion of asbestos and lead abatement seminars or workshops and courses in supervision, organization, and communication. Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering or a closely related field is preferable.
  • Two years of journey-level experience in building construction or maintenance including one year of experience performing or planning and coordinating insulation activities.
  • Two year of experience performing or planning and coordinating asbestos abatement.
  • Five years of experience assisting in major or minor asbestos abatement, or two years of experience assisting in major or minor asbestos abatement and certification from the State of California as a Certified Site Surveillance Technician (CSST).
  • Certification from the State of California as a Certified Asbestos Consultant and one year of experience performing or planning and coordinating asbestos abatement or insulation activities.
  • A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and use of a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, crawl, reach overhead, crouch, kneel, balance, push, pull, and lift up to 100 pounds in inspecting or assisting with projects when needed
  • Ability to work safely at heights including the use of ladders, scaffolds, and other related equipment
  • Ability to work safely in confined spaces
  • Ability to do physical work under conditions involving temperature extremes
  • Sufficient vision to perform site surveys and assessments

Responsibilities

  • Plans the repair, removal, disposal, or encapsulation of asbestos-containing insulation or building materials, and the abatement or in-place management of lead based paint on structures and mechanical systems.
  • Performs site assessments to determine the impact of asbestos and lead-containing materials on construction projects and reviews similar reports prepared by environmental consultants.
  • Assists in the preparation of contracts for asbestos and lead abatement and insulation work, inspects contract work, and recommends payments to contractors.
  • Reviews environmental consultants’ reports for accuracy and to ensure that time frames meet legal requirements.
  • Surveys sites in order to recommend the method of abatement of asbestos and lead-containing building materials.
  • Prepares job estimates, including sketches of work required, and labor and material requirements and costs.
  • Prepares reports describing inspection findings and impacts to projects as determined by review of construction drawings.
  • Assists in scheduling and directing employees engaged in abatement of asbestos and lead containing building materials, and the installation, alteration, and repair of other insulation and building materials.
  • Inspects jobs for progress, quality, and conformity to standard operating procedures, especially safety regulations.
  • Assists in training personnel and in arranging workshops and in-service training programs on the installation, alteration, and repair of insulation and the repair, removal, disposal, or encapsulation of asbestos and lead-containing building materials.
  • Assists in the preparation of applications for State funded abatement projects and documentation that substantiates project completion.
  • Prepares job orders and requisitions for stock and nonstock materials.
  • Plans sequence of work to be completed by employees assigned to a job.
  • May oversee the work of Asbestos Surveyors in the inspection of school buildings to determine the condition of asbestos-containing materials.
  • May act for the Asbestos Abatement Supervisor in the event of absence.
  • May participate in conferences with school administrators and personnel from Maintenance and Operation areas, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, project management, construction, and other District offices regarding asbestos and lead abatement
