About The Position
Kent SeaTech is seeking a dedicated Senior Aquaculture Biologist to join our team in Mecca, California. This full-time, permanent position is ideal for an individual with extensive commercial experience in fish aquaculture, particularly with freshwater species such as largemouth bass, hybrid striped bass, hybrid carp, tilapia, and catfish. Candidates with hands-on experience in farming saltwater fish species will also be considered. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in maintaining brood populations, conducting spawning operations, and managing the culture of fry and live feeds necessary for their growth. The Senior Aquaculture Biologist will report directly to the Production Manager and the Facility Manager. Responsibilities include operating nursery systems for fingerling production, conducting monthly surveys of developing crops in large intensive tanks, and maintaining hatchery and grow-out systems. This includes managing water supplies, recirculation systems, temperature and light control, filtration systems, and other associated fish culture equipment. Daily duties will involve monitoring the culture environment, feeding fish at various life stages, and ensuring the health and water quality of all fish populations. The role also requires manual egg expression from gravid females, fertilization, and hatching, as well as assisting in grading juvenile populations to minimize cannibalism. The ideal candidate will have a long-term vision to help Kent SeaTech grow and improve its operations. A Bachelor’s degree in aquaculture may substitute for one year of commercial fish farming experience, while a PhD in aquaculture with relevant research may substitute for three years of experience. The position demands excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as collaboration with various departments is essential. The candidate must be comfortable working outdoors in the Coachella Valley, which requires significant physical exertion and stamina, as well as the ability to work in wet and slippery conditions.
