We are AI/ML scientists and engineers with deep expertise in AI/ML engineering for health care. We develop AI/ML solutions for the highest impact opportunities across UnitedHealth Group businesses including UnitedHealthcare, Optum Financial, Optum Health, Optum Insight, and Optum Rx. Generative AI methods for working with structured and unstructured health care data are continuously being developed and improved. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week. Requirements

  • Advanced degree in computer science, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative field
  • 3+ years of experience in using ML to solve problems in natural language processing (NLP), or other AI domains
  • 2+ years of experience in Generative AI, grounding architectures, prompt engineering, fine-tuning LLMs and/or improving pre-train LLM’s performance
  • 2+ years of DL frameworks such as PyTorch and/or TensorFlow
  • 2+ years of solid NLP research and developing experience
  • Demonstrated ability to implement and update research-based state-of-the-art LLM methods

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in end-to-end ML pipelines
  • Experience with cloud computing, multi-threading, dynamic batch size adjustment
  • Familiarity with advanced document parsing methods
  • Familiarity with healthcare data (prior authorization, coverage documents, …)
  • Proficiency with SaaS LLMs, including LangChain, advanced vector databases, Experience with Azure OpenAI, Google Vertex AI, or AWS Bedrock

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement AI and machine learning strategies to drive healthcare solutions, build and test machine learning, deep learning, and Generative AI models, and RAG pipelines
  • Research, design and implement scalable machine learning models including efficient programming and multi-threading
  • Engage in the entire software development lifecycle, from design and testing to deployment and maintenance
  • Build robust machine learning pipelines to support production processes
  • Process and transform source data to be used in machine learning pipelines, leveraging cloud computing
  • Driving adoption of new science and best practices among service teams by design and implementation of advanced state-of-the art solutions utilizing Large Language Models (LLMs)
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to determine applicability of AI to business problems
  • Demonstrate self-driven initiative by taking ownership and creating end-to-end solutions
  • Develop and maintain code libraries, tools, and frameworks to support generative AI development
